Summary: After reading review after review and looking at the countless options out there I chose this one due to it's price and the reputation of Yamaha. Our house was pre-wired for a 5.1 system but I didn't want to spend too much. After a few days of testing I am impressed. The sound is decent out of the box but I suggest making adjustments based on what you're listening to. Hopefully this will last a while.
Summary: I purchased the YHT-497 to replace a Samsung Home Theater unit that stopped working. I couldn't believe how good this sounded. The movie's have so much more depth to the sound. The sub woolfer is just full of base. I don't regret the purchase one bit.
Pros: Clear Sound, Easy To Set Up, Good Remote, Interfaces Well With TV, Thundering Bass
Summary: Me and the guys at work are always talking tvs, home theaters, etc. One of the guys was saying that he wanted to buy a new HTS so that got me thinking of getting a new one also. I recently owned a RCA home theater system and replaced it with this one. Needless to say i was blown away. Yamaha has found a loyal fan from here on out. This thing is great and i will be bragging on this system. Only complaint i have is the speaker wire i replaced it with 16 gauge.
Pros: Clear Sound, Easy To Set Up, Good Remote, Great Great Functionality, Interfaces Well With TV, Intuitive Controls, Thundering Bass
Summary: I use this for my entertainment system. I have HDMI in from Verizon Fios HD Cable, PS3, and 1 HDMI input that I often use to connect my laptop. The one HDMI output is connected to my Samsung LCD. The SCENE buttons make it convenient to switch to a designated input (you can program them, not leaving only the option of how the SCENE buttons were labeled). The audio quality is outstanding, despite not being a very "powerful" or highend/expensive system.
Pros: Clear Sound, Energy Efficient, Good Remote, Interfaces Well With TV, Thundering Bass
Summary: I bought this because it was much cheaper than the new version, and was reviewed well on Consumer Reports. And I can't complain! Easy enough to set up (though I had to buy some additional speaker wire) and sounds great. I'm still learning the ins and outs of presets, and other little tweaks to make it better, but it's already perfect out of the box.
Summary: I ordered this for my husband for Father's Day. He was super excited to get it and set it up. For about three months this system worked and sounded great. After that, it started to turn off by itself and made it so the cable box wouldn't work. Now, in order to get it to work only sometimes, we have to turn everything off, unplug it and HOPE that it turns back on and works. We have tried everything, replacing cable boxes thinking that was it (it was not) replacing cords...
Summary: I did a lot of research before choosing this one. Started out looking at sound bars but why not pay the same price and get true surround. I can't say enough how pleased I am with this system. It has PLENTY of bass unlike others have said and the surround speakers are super clear and static free. Setup was a BREEZE anyone that has said different I would venture to say that they are still using a typewriter and a rotary phone it really is super simple.
Summary: After opening up the box and unpacking what seemed to be an obscene amount of cardboard not unlike unpacking the ikea furniture it is sitting on. Luckily it's not nearly as complicated as the furniture to set up. I settled on this system because of my budget, the realization that I don't need a built in dvd player and after watching my phillips system blow up the day before (it had been in 5 counties and re-setup 5 times in the last 1 1/2 years).
