Summary: I bought this unit in june of 2013. Not only that, I purchased this unit used. So I am inclined to say that they are built to last. Electronics are always weird in that they become obsolete. If you buy lower end products usually the components are low end which will reduce life expectancy out of your electronic. This may be an entry level set up but it is not cheap in a sense that you will need to replace it before a year.
Summary: I spent quite a bit of time looking up reviews on Amazon, Consumer Reports, and other websites before I FINALLY settled on the Yamaha YHT-497... that was until I saw the much cheaper YHT-397. I couldn't pick out any strong differences between the two, and I wanted to save some cash, so I picked up the 397. I really couldn't be happier with the set. It was easy to set up, the sound quality is fantastic, and it's very easy to configure.
Summary: I've had this system for about 3 months now and I dont think I could ever go back to tv speakers again. The speakers are little but they really do have great sound. I did replace the center channel with a Polk, but in retrospect I think I could have lived without it. What this brings to movies, especially movies that are dolby digital is amazing. If your using just your tv speakers your missing half the " experience ".
Summary: Awesome system for the price. Got it for $218 brand new. The sound quality is amazing and is a nice companion for my Samsung 55" LED 3D. Has a much better sound quality than I ever experienced from a home theater system once I got it all set up properly. ECO mode shows no slow down or anything. This is the perfect system for a main room or a man cave/movie theater.
Summary: I bought this to upgrade my eight year old surround sound system that didn't handle HDMI inputs. The sound is amazing and the YZAO auto calibration makes the sound amazing without having to know anything about sound or how to make adjustments. Overall I am pretty technical savy, and this has a lot of great features and is ready for the 4K pass-through technology that is the next great thing which means I will not have to upgrade again when that happens!
Summary: I ordered this to replace an aging system I picked up at a department store. Turns out the system was doing just fine my cable company just broadcast some bad audio and made me think I had blown a speaker. I am very glad that I got this system as I am always having to turn the vol. up to a level that is uncomfortable for others to hear what people are saying because the voice audio is almost always buried under the music on modern movies.
Summary: I waited a long time to get a surround sound system for my LED TV. I finally got the Yamaha and glad I didn't go with just a sound bar and woofer system. This unit is awesome the bass has plenty of bass sound like a real theater. I could barely hear my stock speakers on the LED TCL TV especially the voice but now with this system the sound rocks...
Incredible price! Amazing performance! And so dang easy to set up and use!!

Summary: I was so impressed with Yamaha for coming up with this! It was childsplay to install and even simpler to set up. I bought this for the 4 HDMI inputs since I needed more than 1 input so I could link my laptop and roku without having to juggle wires around... and the price! It's for our outdoor home theatre set-up on the covered lanai in a very humid region, so I didn't want to spend too much since it will likely fail within a couple/few years; and heck, it's outside...
Summary: I started out as a fan of sound bars. It seemed like a good idea. No wires and very quick setup. Unfortunately, the Panny sound bar I installed with the wireless sub woofer was not at all WiFi friendly with my Xbox, or my Roku. Nor was it offering any separation, surround or ability to make EQ adjustments, or even serious sub woofer adjustments.
