Review Summary

Sony's RHTG800 consists of a TV stand with shelves for DVD players, consoles, and a built-in speaker and receiver. Using the Sony S-Force technology to simulate a 5.1 sound from a single central speaker, the sound quality is quite satisfactory. With its attractive design and wide range of inputs, this unit is considered quite ok. The audio quality, though not perfect, is enough for most music and movie use. Both bass and treble are clear and audible, without one overriding the other. The player handles most major surround sound formats, up to linear PCM 7.1 at 48k (although not 96k). Unfortunately, despite the presence of HDMI and an input specifically labelled for a Blu-ray disc player, there is no support for DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. The unit is quite elegant, with a glass top panel and is designed to support a maximum of 60kg on top, as well as 14kg on its upper shelf, and 25kg on its lower shelf. The shelves comprise an area approximately 1000mm wide and 400mm deep, with height adjustable to three presets. Cable holders are found at the rear, as well as the inputs, which include three optical audio inputs, two analogue audio inputs, coaxial audio input, two HDMI inputs, and HDMI out. Installation is easy, as the unit comes pretty much in one piece, what you have to do is fit the middle shelf and hook it up to your Blu-ray or HD DVD player and any other inputs you might have. There are speakers at the sides and front. The subwoofer is at the bottom of the unit. The speakers at the side take care of the surround effects while the front speakers take care of speech and stereo effects. The G800 is perfect for a cinema-style experience at home, especially if space is limited.
