Review Summary

The Sony DAV-X10 is exquisite with its glass top, complete with amazing touch panel controls. It is very pretty, good connectivity, amazing pictures and on top easy to set-up and use. The left and right speakers are in a circular design but not so stylish though. The system is the subwoofer with its gloss finish but is too big. While the system carries HD upscaling of your DVDs via the HDMI output, it only goes up to 1080i, not 1080p. Connections are impressive, for as well as the HDMI and the expected component video and outputs; there are optical/coaxial digital inputs and an analogue stereo input for allowing external sources to take advantage of the X10's audio talents. Above all the unit provides two Digital Media Ports that enable you to enjoy sound from a portable audio source or a computer. However you will need adaptors for these, as you can't just plug your stuff straight into them, but Sony has included one of the TDM-BT1 Bluetooth varieties, which allows you to stream audio from your mobile phone. Other features include progressive scan output via component, SACD playback, and Sony's own 'Virtual Surround' processing system, dubbed S-FORCE Pro, so that the system's 2.1 speaker configuration can deliver some sort of surround sound effect. Connecting the speakers is easy, with just simply plug-in the cables that click convincingly when they're engaged, making it very accommodating even for beginners. The onscreen menus are straightforward and attractive, too, while the remote handles all. The X10's HDMI is equipped with Bravia Theatre Sync 2, which enables the system to be controlled by the remote of one of Sony's new Bravia TVs. The Sony DAV-X10 can also auto-calibrate its speaker setup using a pattern of sound bursts from the speakers and a microphone which is included in the package.

  • Audio breaking up with DVDs

Bought this unit for my son's Christmas present and he's having problems with the audio breaking up while playing DVDs. Any thoughts? SONY service is giving him the runaround. Unit is under 1 year warranty.
