Review Summary

The Sony DAV-HDX265 is a 5.1 speaker system and receiver/5-disc DVD changer. The unit includes 5 small speakers, a small sub, receiver/DVD changer, and the remote control. This low profile attractive system is geared well for smaller rooms or secondary theater setups with a standard TV or perhaps a small flat panel display. The included HDMI output port will upscale to 720p or 1080i if your display is capable. Component, S-video, and composite video connections are also included for older displays, as well. However it features only one input. The included remote is quite well organised, but there are many small buttons and that may make it confusing. The 5 disc player will handle many kinds of computer file formats on burned media as well as CDs and DVDs. It is nice for playing some casual background music or low key movies. The unit looks nice with a mix of dark grey and sliver. Overall, the system has some nice features, like an auto-calibration with the included mic, but its sound is pretty average in comparison to other players in the same bracket price. Its small speakers are not that powerful, but you can add your own speakers later to meet your specific requirements but you must also consider the limitations of the amplifier. Sony tried to make the setup a little easier by including custom speakers. The Sony DAV-HDX265 will not produce the finer tunes like explosions or earthquakes in the movies, though it may be better than TV speakers. If the sub is placed very near to the center speaker, it will help to create a more convincing sound from the front speakers. Some people who are looking for a simple and easy to use home theatre can opt for the Sony DAV-HDX265, sound quality is great and the price is great.
