  • Summary: The Samsung HW-D550 sound bar speaker system is a compromise between convenience and high performance. Convenience it achieves nicely, with its wireless sub, HDMI cable connections, and handy remote control. No complaints there. It also looks the part, well matched to the glossy black finish of most large screen HDTVs.

Samsung HW-D550 Speaker Bar

  • Summary: The HW-D550 from Samsung is a product that arrived here without a lot of anticipation.  Samsung requested that I look at this product, and after taking a look at a lot of their other consumer electronics products over the past few years, I thought it would be a bit interesting to look at a sound bar, so I agreed.  Overall, the build quality of the HW-D550 is not too bad - for a plastic speaker.
  • Pros: Excellent input options, Good sound quality, Wireless sub-woofer doesn't receive interference and just works, USB port for firmware updates, Lots of DSP, 3D, Auto-Level options, Separate bass control and lots of bass
  • Cons: All things being equal, this is a pretty good product, but at ~$400 it's a little pricey to have as a "Highly Recommended" product., Speakers aren't as clear as other similarly priced stereo speakers, Plastic enclosure feels pretty cheap, Needs to include more mini-HDMI cables, Pretty expensive way to get better sound from your TV

Samsung HW-D550 AudioBar

PC Magazine

  • Conclusion: With the HW-D550, Samsung manages to pack excellent audio quality and plenty of functionality into a compact, good-looking sound bar.
  • Pros: High-quality audio output. Small, light, attractive. Doubles as a A/V receiver/switch.
  • Cons: "3D Sound" feature is not a true substitute for surround sound.

Surrounding yourself with the Samsung HW-D550 Audio Bar

Digital Home Thoughts
20 October 2011
  • Summary: For a guy who is used to a separate amp, speakers and tons of interconnecting wires, working with an 'all-in-one' sound unit like the Samsung HW-D550 was quite the treat in some respects. But how does it compare where it counts? How does it sound compared to the separate components? All-in-all, it wasn't spectacular, but not too bad. Let's take a closer look and listen....
  • Pros: Compact unit which can be easily wall mounted under the TV screen;, Wireless Subwoofer can be placed anywhere without cables showing;, Multiple audio inputs available (and selectable with the remote) to allow this to become the audio 'hub' of the home theatre.
  • Cons: Only two HDMI inputs;, Midrange is emphasized a little too much (for me);, 'Surround' sound is more reverb/delay than actual repositioning via sound processing.
