Review Summary

The Panasonic SC-PTX7 features pseudo-surround from 2.1 speakers, with an 80GB hard drive. Its performance is good even in 576p mode, and upscaled 1080p pictures are much better. The SC-PTX7 set-up is very easy; all you have to do is simply plug in. The design of its menu makes it easy to navigate. The bold, bright colours and large text, with sensible submenu structures make it easy for you. The buttons on the remote control are well displayed and easy to use. The speaker arrangement is best described as '3.1', with the centre-channel being represented by angled drivers in the two front speakers. A narrow active subwoofer, meanwhile, takes care of the LFE, but there are no additional rear speakers. However the two front speakers hand dialogue into the space where a centre speaker should be. So the Dolby Virtual Speaker makes up for the lack of proper rear channels. The Panasonic SC-PTX7 compact main unit will upscale DVDs to 1080p via the HDMI output on the rear. The HDMI output is joined by an Ethernet port, which allows the unit to be hooked up to the Internet to download song. The Ethernet port also lets you transfer digital music files onto the unit's hard-disk from a PC, or play them live. Other connections include an RGB SCART, component, composite and S-video outputs, alongside analogue and digital audio inputs for connecting external sources. The Music system recognises songs from their waveforms and plays them accordingly. There's a USB port for flash drives and MP3 players, and also a 3.5mm line input (dubbed Music Port) for hooking up MP3 players in an analogue way. The system plays DVDs and CDs but also DVD-Audio, DivX, MP3, WMA and JPEG files. The Panasonic SC-PTX7 has some great features and its performance is impressive.
