Review Summary

The Onkyo HT-S990THX is the first THX-certified integrated home theater system.

The Onkyo HT-S990THX delivers reliably satisfying bass and a good soundfield at an especially affordable price. Its performance is well- balanced with 7.1 surround capability but it lacks an onboard DVD player, however its audio quality is very good. Their speakers are neither cheap nor lightweight. They all have substance, but more importantly, they deliver good sound. The surround speakers are truly a part of this system. All the speakers have binding posts rather than cheaper wire clamps. Connected to a DVD it handles movies and music equally well. The subwoofer is equally good and capable of catching the finest notes in the music. The system is very easy to set up. According to one user, he had it all ready within two hours and immediately sat down to watch Star Wars movies to test the THX sound. He felt like he was a part of the movie. The thing to be noticed is that you do not really perceive where each speaker is as the sound enveloped the room. And the surround effects made you think something was flying around you. He also found that the collective accoustic sound of the speakers blend well but were not exceptional. Nevertheless he was shocked at how amazing these speakers sound. The only extra thing needed to perfect this home theatre system is a Digital Optical Audio cable. The Subwoofer goes into standby when it doesn’t sense a signal for a period of time, which is a good thing. The Onkyo HT-990THX appears to be a good choice as a home theatre system. It’s got plenty of power, lots of features, and looks very nice. People who bought the Onkyo HT-990THX are highly satisfied with this product and would gladly recommend it.

  • volume keeps increasing by itself (Onkyo HT-S990THX)

I have had this system for 2 years, I work in the audio industry so know alot about music and sound, and this is a great sounding system. I have a problem that has just appeared - with digital audio (toslink) coming from my satellite receiver, sometimes when switching from commercials back to program, the audio slowly starts increasing. By itself. I have to keep an eye on it and decrease. Anyone heard of this? Thanks, John.
