Summary: I've had this running for about one month and still enjoy it immensely. Okay, this is the top end of the middle end, or so I am led to understand by those who write reviews. What I liked best about the packaged system was being able to open the enormous box and have mind-blowing sound (by my untrained ears) fully set up and running in just an couple short hours.
Incredible Sound -- Do not waste your money on Bose

Summary: Recently moved into a new house and needed a top-of-the-line sound system for the entertainment room. I looked at Philips, JBL and even considered getting a $2500 Bose system. I've been in Bose showrooms and listened to the amazing sound there. I have an extensive audio background of 20 years so I know what good sound is, and to be completely honest, the only difference from Bose and this Onkyo system is a couple thousand dollars.
Excerpt: fantastic unit, everyone came out great after 2 hours of setup this is my third time building up a system, so a lot faster than first timers...., and I didn't spend time tidy up the cables. The speakers had some cosmetic damage in the back corner, but I doubt anyone is going to see it, I'm using it with epson 3010e projector system so most of the speaker hides behind the 100 inch screen anyway.
Excerpt: 7.1 means that 8 total speakers comes in the box. They are pretty easy to set up and the receiver has many connections to plug in components. Had this system for about 10 days now. Therefore I only have newbie opinions at this time. Sound is pretty decent for a normal size room. Radio sound is very clean and sounds good.
Summary: I'm a bit of an audiophile but had trouble justifying to the lady of the house the need for a nicer system in our den when our living room already has one. So I settled and picked this Onkyo up. Having been sorely disappointed by theater in a box solutions before I wasn't expecting much, but was somewhat suprised once I got everything hooked up.
Pros: Audyssey makes all the difference, take the time to calibrate your system, it is well worth it. 3D pass through is clean, upconversion is solid. Source selection, both on the reciever and remote is well layed out, and turning off a source via HDMI is nice.
Cons: My only grip is that the remote is not backlit, but it is a solid remote otherwise.
The best you can get for under $1K but lacking a few basic features

Summary: Awesome sound, very sturdy system. Great value at $795. Pros: High Quality speakers and powerful receiver. Tons of sound processing features. Cons: No HD Radio tuner, no IPOD dock, no wireless technology for internet or surround speakers. (many lower priced brands have these features) Subwoofer box a bit too big, not as punchy as expected. Included speaker wire is a joke, not rated well for the speakers.
Summary: I have set this up in a 24x18 foot long room. I had to add an additional 125 watt sub-woofer to the room to give it the fullness this medium sized room needed. It is almost not powerful enough to complete what this room needed for a full theater sound. I love most of what this system can do, it paired well with my AQUOS LC-70LE735U 70" 3D LED-LCD TV , the audio link configuration is wonderful, but needs some additional options for what is output onto the TV when it is...
Excerpt: Great sound but finding proper balance is difficult. Dialogue is overpowered by music and sound effects on factory settings. iPod connection is cumbersome and not as easy as you might like but is useful. A little pricey considering but listen to thx intro on movies like Indiana jones and it will blow you away.
