With the YSP-4000, listeners can enjoy surround sound without having to set up multiple components. This Hi-Fi speaker system boasts of 40 1.5 inch drivers, 2 4.25 inch subwoofers, and a built-in digital amplifier. The built-in amplifier gives each driver 2 watts of power and 20 watts to each of the woofers. The system eliminates the need for an additional amplifier and receiver.
The YSP-4000 has a docking terminal for the optional YDS-10 iPod dock. To connect other portable media players, a 3.5 mm jack in the front is provided. The speaker system is also XM satellite radio ready, with an antenna jack compatible with XM’s Mini Tuner Home Dock.
Setting up the surround sound with the YSP-4000 can be easily automated using the included microphone. With Yamaha’s “IntelliBeam” technology, the system will analyze the sound and automatically position the beams at the best angles.
Surround sound processing technologies include Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, DTS, Neural and Yamaha’s own Cinema DSP.
The Yamaha YSP-4000 is HDMI compliant and offers switching between 720p and 1080p resolutions. The system also features upscaling of analog video to HDMI for optimal viewing on High Definition screens.

I love this thing. It’s so simple that even the most non-technical of people can figure out how to use it. It’s also just so damn convenient that you will find yourself listening to more music than you ever imagined, which is a compliment traditionally reserved for the most lofty audiophile products, with a price tag to match. Yamaha should be proud of how well the YSP reproduces music from such a slim and relevant product. Read more
The YSP-4000 is the newest and top-of-the-line product in this well received line. To say that it has been pushed to its limits in this review is probably an understatement. But did it pass? In my book - yes… for movies. Are you going to need a DVD player or other source? Yes. Are you going to need a subwoofer? Definitely. But for movies, what you'll get is a convincing facsimile of surround from a single source, undeniable cool factor, and convenience galore. Read more
One thing we learned from reviewing Yamaha’s YSP-4000 Digital Sound Projector is that this isn’t a gimmick. It really works, and in the right rooms the setup works really well (prior to purchase, we also auditioned a properly-configured unit in an enclosed room). There’s plenty of power for the recommended room size (25’x25’), the audio quality is very good, and surround sound performance is on-par with similarly-priced 5.1 setups. The Yamaha YSP-4000 Digital Sound Projector ($1,799) is one of the simplest solutions this speaker-shy demographic could embrace. One could call the YSP-4000 the ultimate HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) because it contains speakers (or what Yamaha calls "sound beams"), amplification and complex signal processing that emulates surround sound, and video switching in a single enclosure.
