Conclusion: The YSP-1400 is the latest addition to Yamaha’s well received line of sound projectors. $449.95 doesn’t just buy a quality sound bar for listening to audio coming from straight ahead, but adds surround through the clever application of “bouncing” discrete audio streams off of walls and back to the listener.
Pros: Dialogue enhancement, Can learn the TVs remote
Cons: Audio adjustments can vary widely depending on the room's configuration
Summary: If you’re looking for the best sound bar to pair with your TV, the Yamaha YSP 1400 is at the top of the class. It effectively simulates surround sound thanks to its 5.1 channels and omnidirectional speakers. The results are rich, clear and crisp sounds that truly outclass your TV’s built-in speakers and create a great-sounding home theater environment. You can enjoy movies the way they were meant to be watched, with great sound.
Pros: This sound bar has a rich, realistic sound and 5.1 channels for maximum performance.
Cons: The design is a little bulky, so it may get in the way of your TV remote sensor.
Virtual surround sound on a budget -- with a catch
14 January 2014
Summary: Yamaha's YSP-1400 brings the company's Digital Sound Projector technology to a budget price point, but a couple of caveats keep it from being a standout sound bar.
Pros: The Yamaha YSP-1400 sound bar features the company's Digital Sound Projector technology that bounces sound off the walls in your room to create credible virtual surround sound. The system has built-in Bluetooth and an IR repeater, so it won't block your signals from your TV's remote control. There's also onboard decoding for both Dolby Digital and DTS. And its budget price is far below Yamaha's other Digital Sound Projector sound bars.
Cons: Getting a true surround sound signal to the YSP-1400 can be difficult. While it does sound more spacious than a standard sound bar, it doesn't match the true virtual surround magic of Yamaha's pricier sound bars. And the lack of an external subwoofer means bass won't be quite as deep or powerful as systems with a separate sub.
Conclusion: Yamaha’s YSP-1400 Sound Projector delivers a bevy of features, an immersive soundstage, and great detail. The audio settings are fully configurable, and the system offers a lot of punch, without the need for a subwoofer sidecar. The treble was a little bright for our taste, and we were also disappointed with the system’s lack of HDMI ARC, especially since we couldn’t get it to read our TV remote’s volume commands.
Pros: Good clarity and detail, Deep bass response for a stand-alone unit, Dimensional sound stage, Highly configurable audio settings
Cons: Can get too aggressive in the treble, Not ideal for music playback, No ARC connection/trouble with programming our TV remote
