Wharfedale Diamond 9.1

The Diamond 9.1 from Wharfdale’s renowned Diamond 9 series are a set of 2 way passive bookshelf speakers. The magnetically shielded left and right channel speakers each measure 7.6 x 11.7 x 10.9 inches (W x H x D) and weigh 12 pounds. The enclosures are constructed out of medium density fiberboard (MDF) and also come with detachable speaker grilles. The high quality system, which is given a vinyl treatment, is available in the following colors: black ash, cherry wood, beech wood, rosewood, brushed silver.

Each speaker from the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 features a 25 mm tweeter driver and a 5 inch mid/woofer driver. The woofer is made of woven kevlar while its frame is made of cast-alloy metal. The cast-alloy frame features the strength but not the thickness of its plastic and stamped metal counterparts seen in most speaker systems. The thinness allows air to flow more freely. The woofer’s MDF enclosure has a curved design and is thoroughly reinforced. The curved structure is meant to counteract the higher than usual amount of energy firing into the rear of the cabinet caused by the open-back chassis design. The curves leads to better low frequency sound reproduction.

The speaker system also features gold plated connectors and screened bi-wiring. The gold connectors increase the efficiency of electrical contact due to gold’s high electrical conductivity and its pliability. Bi-wiring allows both the high frequency and the woofer drivers to have their own connection, leading to increased clarity and detail in sound production. The screened wires reduce interference that is usually caused by loose strands of wire.

These Diamonds 9.1s make a mockery of their £180 price tag – they’re worth every penny and then some more. Driver integration is... Read more
