Don't need a sub but the sub allows these speakers to focus on what the are best at. 800 sqrft room and these fill it no problem . 80% movies 20% music. Your jaw will drop the first time you hear these in your hour.
Summary: Amazing and beautiful speakers, no need for Sub Woofer unless extremely necessary. I have done Biamping with Yamaha RX-V871 7.2 Network receiver and am loving every bit of it. I have a basement room size of 25' by 16' and I get a very good bass effect with crystal clear sound.
