Summary: I'm surprised by the poor reviews for these speakers. I purchased them in combination with the Denon AVR-E300 5.1 Channel 3D Pass Through and Networking Home Theater AV Receiver with AirPlay . I live in an apartment with a sizable living room area, and these speakers combined with the receiver more than fill the space. They are tiny, but with proper setup (I used the Audyssey setup on my receiver) they sound spectacular.
Summary: As with many JBL subs, the amp died outside of the warranty period, but less than four years after I bought it. Additionally, the whole series has been discontinued, and JBL customer support was useless. Buy this only if you want to purchase another subwoofer sooner than you'd like.
Summary: This is the second set I have purchased. I moved and left the first set in the house. All the speakers are excellent. However, the circuit board on the on my first set went out in about one year. It cost more to fix it that it was worth. So I purchased one from another manufacture. I understand many have had the same problem.
Doesn't sound like Bose, isn't priced like it, either

Summary: This sound system is not bad for the money. Because I have a Bose Acoustimass 6 Home Entertainment Speaker System - Black system already installed, most of my comments here are as a result of comparing the JBL system to that one. The JBL components are a little bigger and weightier, but it gives everything an overall solid feel.

Summary: These are tiny speakers, surprisingly so. My original plan for these speakers was to use them in my small office to provide the surround system I need to blockade the sound of football this fall. (Why? Why does football have to come on every year?) Anyway, to provide surround sound in a room that is 5 by 20 feet is not that difficult and these worked fabulously. The speakers did. The subwoofer was not actually necessary. It basically just bounced the room.
Summary: I have used this speaker system with my Onkyo TX-SR313 5.1-Channel Home Theater A/V Receiver in the main bedroom of my home and have been very pleased with its performance. Obviously in such a setting you do not want large, unsightly speakers. the ones supplied with this system are compact in size and easily mountable, although in my case I have them merely sitting on nightstands and dressers, around the room for tv watching/movie viewing from bed.
Summary: The JBL 5.1 Channel Surround Cinema Speaker System produces pretty decent overall surround sound experience. The satellite speakers are compact in size and could be easily installed around the living room area. The powered Sub-woofer (measures about 13" x 13" x 13" in size) produced pretty good base sound. I guess time would tell regarding the longevity of the sub-woofer based on the experience from other reviewers.
Summary: Not sure really to go with the review, the sound is really mediocre and what I'm researching about the sub is that it has a MTBF (mean/average time before failure) of a few days. JBL use to make great speakers, I remember when my father paired a nice set of fronts with his component system and was blown away but this is the third set of JBL's I've had in the last 5 years and all have been actually worse than a comparable brand, Sony.
