Summary: These are great little plastic speakers for where you need them to amplify themselves and just disappear. They have no bass; I'd prefer the sound from a cheaper satellite system with a bad subwoofer than these speakers run with no subwoofers at all. These speakers are fine for voice, and sound fuller played in a larger room as opposed to a desktop on which I used them.
Focal XS Book Desktop Speaker System (Playback 56)
8 May 2012
Excerpt: The Focal XS Book is a two unit powered speaker with relatively compact dimensions (11” high x 4.5” wide x 7.9” deep). While aimed at the desktop market, where each speaker would normally be placed to the sides of a computer monitor, it’s compact dimensions and neat wiring also lend the XS Book to other uses. For example, you could simply use it with an iPhone, Android or iPod as a basic music system.
Summary: We reckon these Focal XS Book speakers are trying to channel some MacBook desirability. That’s no bad thing. Certainly the design fits; they stand tall and look smart. The Focals’ footprint is certainly within the boundaries of acceptability, but at nearly 30cms tall and 20cms deep they may not fit every desk. There’s a volume dial on top, plus 3.5mm and stereo audio inputs. And with Focal’s audio heritage, we had high hopes for the sound quality.
