Westone UM1 In-Ear Monitors review

Technoodling
13 December 2011
  • Excerpt: After having been impressed with the Westone 4, we continue the pursuit for audio excellence but focusing this time on more affordable fare. After all, not everyone is willing to shell out Php 20,000 for a pair of in-ear headphones.
  • Pros: Good, balanced sound output, a huge upgrade from ordinary earphones, Comes with a bunch of ear tips which makes it impossible not to find one that perfectly fits, Tangle-less cord, Stylish and fits the ear perfectly
  • Cons: Cord a bit short, The rubber near the earphone jack is a bit too thick, a bit hard to insert with some iPhone 4S cases

  • Summary: There is no doubt about it, the Westone UM1s are a great pair of earphones for the price. With an estimated retail price of only $109 these headphones are well suited to take on the competition in this price segment. Their balanced warm sound signature will be appealing to the majority of listeners.
  • Pros: Excellent fit, Superb comfort, Balanced mids, 50" cable, Copes well with micro phonics, Well suited sound signature for most music genres, Open sound, Bang for the buck, Detailed sound, Barely enough bass for most music types
  • Cons: Bass extension, Amount of bass, Treble detail

  • Summary: A decent IEM choice, but we’d recommend the Etymotic or Shure entry level models over the UM1 if you’re looking in this price bracket.
  • Pros: Above average sound
  • Cons: Doesn’t really keep pace with the competition

  • Conclusion: First of all, these two Earphones produce vastly different, yet similar quality sound. There is no question that the UM2's produced consistently richer, fuller, more pronounced, cleaner sound with incredibly deep bass in every category tested.
  • Pros: Beautiful sound, comfortable, incredible sound isolation
  • Cons: Expensive (UM2's)
