Excerpt: : Recently I was on the hunt for another not-too-expensive set of in-ear style headphones that could replace my Sony EX71 earbuds. Despite the Sony units only costing $35, they have better bass and better sound than most of the much more expensive earbuds you find out on the market these days. Several months ago I purchased a set of Shure e3c earbuds from an Apple store thinking “Hey, they’re expensive, they must sound good too!”. I was disappointed.
Summary: The V-MODA Vibes is an interesting pair of in-ears from a design point of view. The stylish aluminum body and carried through design just looks fantastic compared to normal in-ears. However, the sound performance isn't exactly stellar. Even though the performance of these in-ears isn't that good it's still a nice upgrade from normal ear buds that you get with your iPod, iPhone etc.
Pros: Powerful bass, Easy to insert into one's ear, Comfort, Build quality, it's made of aluminum!, Bundle, Durability, Minimal microphonic disturbance compared to the design of the earphones, Price, Works with the iPhone because of the rather odd mini-jack design
Cons: Cord length, Mids and highs not all that precise, Noise isolation could be better, Design of mini-jack connector, Bass is a bit muddy some times
Conclusion: Time to pimp that Pod with stylish and quality earphones from V-Moda. Tired of those uncomfortable lumps of plastic that came with your new iPod? Perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to splash some cash on some replacements.
Conclusion: The Vibes are a definite recommendation. I don’t know of any other IEM in the $100 category that comes close in sound clarity, crispness, instrument separation and fun, not to mention the build quality. The Vibes outclass the Etymotic ER-6 in most aspects. They might not be exactly as linear as the Etys, but they’re so much more fun to listen to, the sound is more engaging.
Pros: Clear, balanced, non-fatiguing sound, very crisp and dynamic – and fun to listen to., Marginally wider soundstage than most other IEM-style earphones., Comfortable to wear for an IEM-style earphone, huge assortment of silicone fittings., Solid overall look and feel – phones, plug and cable., Unique industrial design.
Cons: Does not isolate nearly as well as most other IEMs. This might not necessarily be a negative point for some applications, but it’s really bad while trying to listen to music in loud environments., Straight 3.5 mm plug. It’s a matter of taste, but might damage the headphone jack of an audio player more easily than an angled plug., Microphonic cables, like most other IEMs.
Conclusion: We rather appreciate the Vibes' ability to amplify audio coming from the sound source -- by a lot. We were able to listen to music at about half the volume than we normally would, which will probably conserve an MP3 player battery more than usual -- always a plus.
Pros: A bit overpowering on the low-end, May be uncomfortable for some users
Cons: Stylish, Amplify the audio from the sound source, Come with several fun or useful accessories, Overall sound quality is very good
