Sony MDR-XB500 Headphones

23 February 2011
  • Excerpt: These headphones retail for about 50 bucks and you can get it for cheaper if you shop around. You get an okay pair of headphones for 50 bucks. As for the build quality, it’s a full-on plastic construction. It uses metal hinges that slide up and down. I’ve used them pretty vigorously. I’ve gone skiing with them twice and they’ve held up marvelously. I haven’t discovered any problems with the hinges or build but like I said, it is 100% plastic.

  • Summary: If you are looking for a versatile set of headphones, pass these up. I would only recommend them for rap, hip hop, or dance music, but that is about all.
  • Pros: These headphones sound good for dance music, rap, and hip hop.
  • Cons: They do not sound very good for most other types of music.

Bassy, comfy, but not great sound quality.

  • Summary: I bought these on the strength of wearing them in a shop and hearing them play some generic easy-listening music that I hadn't heard before. The strong bass and comfy feel convinced me to give them a go, but upon plugging them in to my own music players they were a little disappointing. The sound is pretty lacklustre with detail and tone sacrificed to feed the bass.
