Good sound

Eric L., Newegg
13 January 2015
  • Summary: They sound good, but they are low performers in pretty much all other catagories. For the money, I could not in good consience, recommend these. If they were about half the price, I could recommend them then.
  • Pros: The sound great, ample bass.
  • Cons: They feel very cheap. Very flimsy and they don't have that "heavy" feel to them. These seem like they could be easily broken. I bought these with the intention of being able to wear them at my computer and not hear anyone around me, or for my wife to hear my music while she sleeps. She tapped on ...

XB500 retrospective

ford c., Newegg
12 November 2014
  • Summary: Absolutely excellent headphones on all fronts. They sound amazing, they are extremely comfortable even for long periods of time and with proper care, a pair of these can last many years. The cons are literally "it eventually wears out" meaning there are no cons to these.
  • Pros: I bought a pair of these from wal - mart for $50 about 6 years ago and they finally wore out after almost daily use the entire time. They didn't fail because of the speakers which still sound amazing, I'll get into why they wore out in the cons. The ear cushions are also incredibly comfortable. I...
  • Cons: After 6 years with these things I've noticed a few things like what parts will fail first and wear down first. The reason my old pair of these wore out and broke was because the plastic that connects the earphones to the headband piece is very thin and somewhat brittle and torquing the headphones...

Super comfy

Mark G., Newegg
4 June 2014
  • Pros: Super comfy and super nice sound. It sounded better fed through my Samsung Galaxy S4, than on my work computers. Maybe I need to buy an amplifier or some dsp hardware. Overall, I can keep these on all day and not have any ear fatigue. They are that great. They beat the new ones coming out from Sony.
  • Cons: Discontinued! These are soo much better than the new ones.

2011 -> 2014, Wire kink'd

Siddhant M., Newegg
16 January 2014
  • Summary: Just a couple of days ago, the left speaker of the headphone lost their connection, so unless I twist the wire correctly, the sound cuts there. It's rather uncomfortable to do that :( This is after daily use since 06/2011 to 01/2014, 8+ hours every weekday, at the office.
  • Pros: - Comfortable - Loud
  • Cons: - I got these from Newegg for $40 in 2011, why are they so expensive now?

Price should be around 80$

MICHAEL A., Newegg
3 December 2013
  • Summary: Purchase at a local retailer or somewhere else for $80. I'm not sure why its doubled the price here. Maybe, a glitch?
  • Pros: It's very light weight, which means this headphones won't hurt your ear for long time of use. Not to mention, the ear cushions are very soft. The cables NEVER get tangled. Sound quality is still outstanding after 4 years of use. Very low bass, the mids are acceptable, and highs are good and crisp...
  • Cons: Since the band is made up of plastic, it has become 'loose' It doesn't arch as tight before. Wish the cables only came from one ear and/or are detachable. The 'leather' materials from the head band, ear cushions are coming off. But, that is to be expected after long years of use. (There are times...

Sony MDR-XB500 Headphones

Fuscero, ReviewStream
8 April 2013
  • Excerpt: These headphones retail for about 50 bucks and you can get it for cheaper if you shop around. You get an okay pair of headphones for 50 bucks. As for the build quality, it’s a full-on plastic construction. It uses metal hinges that slide up and down. I’ve used them pretty …

Josiah B., Newegg
20 December 2012
  • Pros: - No need for bass-boosting software or turning up the lower frequencies too much on the EQ settings! (I only turned it up a little bit and the headphones will *shake* with the right bass tones. i.e. lots of bass if you're into that. - Good range of sound - VERY comfortable! The ear phones are li...

XB 500's

Steven L., Newegg
23 July 2012
  • Summary: They are worth the cost, but I wouldn't pay to much more than what Newegg sells them for.
  • Pros: Clear Bass, mid to high range sound clearness, the padding is worth the cost.
  • Cons: Don't handle some lower volume levels very well, then again these aren't designed to listen at near silence levels. Short cable as I am used to cables over 10', to fix that I bought an extension cable.

Comfort and good sound

DARYL C., Newegg
10 June 2012
  • Summary: Bought these originally for my wife for music recording. The isolation is good, and the sound is excellent for the money. They're so nice I bought a set for myself. I can wear them for hours, even with my glasses, due to the deep cushions.
  • Pros: Comfortable - even with glasses, good sound, excellent value
  • Cons: no mounting for a microphone boom, no volume control
