Sony MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones

PC Magazine
2 January 2012
  • Conclusion: Sony’s MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones auto-adjust to the ambient noise in your environment, but they suffer from distortion that should never occur in this price range.
  • Pros: Highly effective noise cancellation that auto-adjusts to your environment. Comfortable for long-term listening. Detachable (and thus replaceable) cable.
  • Cons: Distorts badly on bass-heavy songs when noise cancellation is engaged. Uses triple-A battery despite ample room for a rechargeable compartment.

Sony MDR-NC200D

What Hi-Fi?

  • Excerpt: The Sony NC200Ds ’ noise-cancelling does a good job of smoothing out the world’s background noise. However, this effect is also apparent in the sound coming out of their drivers; with the tech turned on, everything sounds a bit too gentle and muffled. The riffs and basslines in Green Day’s Hitchin’ A Ride overwhelm the vocals and some detail and attack get lost in the confusion. The sound quality is marginally better when the Sonys are used passively.
  • Pros: Good noise-cancelling, snug fit
  • Cons: Slightly muffled and smooth sound compromises detail and bite
