The Sony MDR-AS40EX is a part of the company’s Active Style product line of sporty headphones. The MDR-AS40EX have an earbud design and has hangers that go over each ear. These soft ear clips help keep the earbuds in place during strenuous physical activity. The earphones can also be used as regular earbuds when the ear clips are removed.

The MDR-AS40EX is lightweight at only 21 ounces with the ear clips and is available in a low-key black color with red and silver accents.

The earphones have a 9 mm diameter driver with neodymium magnets. Along with the neodymium, the MDR-AS40EX’s earbud design, when seated in the ear properly, provides better bass reproduction.

It has a modular cord with the main cord having a length of 2 feet and the included extension cord measuring an additional 2 feet. The length of the short main cord is meant to make it more convenient to use with a portable media player carried on an arm band. The main cord also has a clip which the wearer can use to keep the wires secure and out of the way. Another useful feature for the fitness enthusiast is the Sony MDR-AS40EX’s moisture guard. The moisture guard is designed to keep the wearer’s sweat away from the speakers by routing the moisture around the headphones.

The Sony MDR-AS40EX package includes 3 earbuds of different sizes (small, medium and large) to ensure the user finds the most comfortable fit. Sony has also provided 3 different sizes (S, M, L) of the soft ear clips. An additional accessory in the box is a hard plastic carrying case.

The MDR-AS40EX lacks tremendous bass; even the $20 TuneBuds from Griffin best these earphones in the low-frequency output department. Still, bass isn't everything: You do get clear, crisp audio, and the included fit kit ensures that the 'phones stay put. What's more, unlike some... Read more
