The Sony Noise Canceling Headphones work well on Planes

Saxguy, Viewpoints
13 February 2013
  • Excerpt: I bought a pair of Sony Noise Canceling headphones in advance of an airplane trip. They did a decent job of reducing the airplane noise They did a decent job of reducing external noise, basically by creating a low-level hum that made it much less noticeable. However, once the external noise source is gone, the hum remains. So, without any noise to cancel, these head phones do not osund as good as good headphones without the noise canceling feature.

Average set of headphones

  • Excerpt: Sony's Noise Cancelling Headphones are a middle of the road product that really doesn't outperform its competitors by much other than its lower price. The headphones are battery-powered and generate negative sound waves that counteract noises in the environment, but the effect is more like having your music cushioned on a thin layer of white noise.

Sony MDR-NC40 Headphones: not bad, not great

oh-marco, Viewpoints
9 September 2012
  • Excerpt: Reviewing the Sony MDR-NC40 headphones (product title was vague). I am a frequent traveler on 4+ hour flights, so killing time watching movies/TV shows on my Sony PSP or listening to music on my iPod is an absolute MUST. After struggling with earbuds against the constant engine noise (not to mention plane talkers and screaming babies), I decided to pick up a pair of noise canceling headphones.

Comparison with Bose QC15

Hawfinch, Amazon
20 November 2013
  • Summary: I already owned the Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones, which are the same price as these, and wanted a second pair of noise cancelling headphones to use at another location. So I thought I'd try this Sony pair, based on the positive reviews. In terms of build quality the Sony are superior. They look and feel solid, metallic and professional. Alongside them the Bose look slightly plasticky and cheap.

Too Bright & Too Harsh

Jamie McAllister, Amazon
25 July 2013
  • Summary: These headphones are like Jekyll and Hyde. It's craziness. On one hand, you have a warm, balanced headphone and on the other, you have something that's had a schizophrenic break and can't wait to scream in your face. Well, first things first.. These things look.. Great! The build quality is spectacular, they're (almost) made entirely of metal, with red-trim, but are unbelievably light.

Fantastic sound Quality, rubbish noise cancelling

NikA, Amazon
9 May 2013
  • Summary: I have always been a Sony customer when it comes to portable audio products from Discman to new Walkman series and their headphone line. I tried many different headphones before purchasing these from amazon including the notorious Bose QC15. These are by far superior to Bose in term of sound quality and comfort. They are even better that the normal MDR-1R in terms of sound and build quality. Where they suffer is the noise cancelling. Put it simply IT DOESN'T WORK.

Mooie hoofdtelefoon

Bose QC15 vs. Sony MDR1RNC

A.H., Amazon
12 January 2014
  • Summary: Sound quality – winner: Bose Sony is somewhat better with highs, Bose is better with bass. Both have enough bass, but in a car with noise cancelling on the Sony loses so much bass that it is clearly lacking. Bose could also do with a bit more bass in a car, but still acceptable. I ordered the Sony first and for me this was the deciding factor to order the Bose as well to compare and keep the better one.

Soundkäse

Taxmax "taxmax", Amazon
12 August 2013
