Shure SE420 In-Ear Headphones

14 July 2011
  • Summary: The SE420s offer smooth, neutral tonal balance, and a good though not quite great measure of detail and nuance. It’s been said that the great is the enemy of the good, and sadly, it’s true.

8 August 2007
  • Summary: High-performing sound-isolating earphones, but for half as much again you'll get twice the performance. Competing earphones offer better low and high performance for less money. Some wil argue that the method of wearing Shure earphones is too pro for the casual listener, however as an upgrade to a...

Review: Shure SE420 Noise-Canceling Earbuds

6 February 2007
  • Excerpt: External-noise obliterating headphones too big for your commuter kit? These buds might be for you. Packing amazing sound into a tight package, the SE420s easily drowned out a random jackass yammering away on his cell phone so we could savor the dulcet sounds on our playlist.
  • Pros: Dual drivers deliver incredible treble, clear mids, and size-belying bass. Great design makes putting them in your ear a cinch. One of the best noise-blockers we’ve ever tested.
  • Cons: The price of a supertight fit: After a couple of hours, your ear canals feel, well, violated. Mid-cord miniplug makes them hard to wrap around your iPod.

Expert Review

4 May 2010
