Summary: The Roccat Kave XTD is a good PC gaming headset that has a lot to offer. However, it is only good for specific cases of use. Whereas many gaming headsets are viable in many situations, the Kave XTD will live on your desk. While having a specific use narrows its audience, that doesn't diminish its capabilities. Few PC gaming headsets can do surround sound well, and the Kave XTD is one of the best in that regard.
Pros: The built-in sound card provides an excellent 5.1 surround-sound experience.
Cons: While active noise-canceling headphones aren't exactly necessary, we feel the Kave XTD's ear cups could block outside noise better.
Summary: This is a set that excels at recreating great ambience, nothing more. But, if that's all you want, this set is perfect. We personally feel that 5.1 sound from a headset is overrated, but for those who really want it, this is the best option by far. This is not a set that pro-gamers will even want or appreciate, they've got the Steelseries V2 for that, but for an enthusiast, this is an excellent choice; it also makes for an excellent gift.
Pros: Great Design, Surround sound that actually works, Everything that a gamer might want, Great control pad
Cons: Sub-par for music, Bass lacks precision, Build quality
Summary: Final Thoughts
Looking at the Roccat Kave as an overall package, it’s hard not to recommend it. It delivers great sound quality and performance. The construction of the headset is worth noting again. Even though it’s a bit on the heavy side, it has an amazingly solid feel to it which makes it a great choice for LAN’s or tossing it in a bag for on the go use. I also really liked the options provided in the desktop controller.
Pros: – Great audio quality for gaming and just about anything else, – Solid construction and design, Desktop controls are quick and convenient, Removable mic and fold up design makes it a great option for LAN use
Cons: – The headband causes comfort issues after extended use
Excerpt: Aside from visual graphics, audio feedback is one of the most important ways gamers discern information about their gaming world. Audio cues are incredibly important, in fact, during multiplayer first person shooters when enemies are located behind the player or to the side. A good set of headphones or speakers can allow a gamer to detect an opponent before he even sees them.
Excerpt: ROCCAT is a new player in the US computer peripheral market, but they’ve been around on the European scene for some time. The company is looking to make a big statement with their initial US product lineup, and their first audio offering is the Kave 5.1 analog surround sound headset . The Kave 5.1 headset is a true 5.1 headset in that it doesn’t rely on virtual surround sound voodoo.
Summary: The best features of the Kave are its portability, having a good surround performance while gaming, and its microphone. The use of the illuminated tip to indicate whether the microphone is on mute is great. Because of the small rectangular opening on the ear cups, no sound bleeds to the microphone. On the other hand, that shape is somewhat uncomfortable and can be tiring on the ear. The separate unit allows on-the-fly independent volume control.
Summary: The ROCCAT Kave headset design is good up to a point. The noisy amplifier, general sound quality and the headband construction is a major let down. The mechanical design is ROCCAT at its best, it is durable, light weight and easily adjustable, however, the rest of the design could do with a bit more attention. After a lot of tweaking you can get good surround sound performance, but with it comes a loss of detail that is massive.
Pros: True 5.1 surround sound, External USB powered amplifier, Good directional positioning in games compared to price, Good quality microphone, Very good build quality, Microphone mute LED, Light weight
Cons: Music and movie playback sound quality, Coherency issues, Noisy amplifier section, Slightly annoying headband

Excerpt: 2 Flares 2 Flares × KitGuru has had the opportunity to test a number of ROCCAT products in the past and have been impressed with their quality and performance. Today we are going to look at the ROCCAT Kave gaming headset that has an impressive specification and feature set. This headset was actually released a while back but we haven’t had a chance to look at it until now.
Conclusion: All in all, the Kave is a fantastic headset. It’s got a few flaws here and there, but for Roccat’s first foray into the headset market, they’ve done just what they did with their other product lines; put the fear into the big boys. Not only does this headset deliver in the audio department, but it looks great, as well as not being too expensive; though probably out of the price range of the more modest gamer.
Pros: Great sound quality, Top notch clarity at higher volumes, Looks good, Useful volume control functions
Cons: Bass frequencies not as pronounced as others, Volume control needs volume indicator
