HiFiMan HE-500 Over-the-Ear Planar Magnetic Headphones and EF-5 Headphone Amplifier
Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity

Summary: Although I use earbuds almost daily, it was about time I caught up on headphones, and the HiFiMAN HE-500 was a great re-introduction to the world of over-the-ear headphones. It gave me wonderful clarity, detail, and neutrality, with nary a hint of audible distortion. Although the EF-5 Bench Test results were not exactly stellar, the amp worked very well with the HE-500.
HiFiMAN HE-500 Planar Magnetic Headphones (Playback 47)

Excerpt: for a while, you will know that we hold HiFiMAN planar magnetic headphones in pretty high regard. No manufacturer is perfect, but HiFiMAN has managed to impress in its short time on the scene (or maybe because of it, since they seem to be trying very hard to get it right). The HiFiMAN HE-5LE ($699) began the HiFiMAN wave, and is certainly one of the market’s performance/value leaders.
Summary: The recent success of HiFiMAN is definitely deserved. Not only are they pushing the upper limits for the level of sound quality achievable with a set of headphones, they are also largely responsible for the revival of the old yet obviously interesting planar magnetic technology. The HE-500s are a real feat of engineering. When we first heard the enormously power hungry HE-6s we did not believe that a quite efficient version could be made to sound almost the same.
