HiFiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphones (Playback 37)

Excerpt: reviewed HiFiMAN’s superb HE-5LE Planar Magnetic Headphone ($699), concluding that not only could its hold its own versus competitors roughly twice its price, but it could also in some respects surpass them. Obviously this meant the HE-5LE was a bargain, a product with performance so good you might think it would be pointless for HiFiMAN to try and improve upon its design.
Summary: The Head-Direct HiFiMAN HE-6 headphones provide a very interesting mix of qualities. Compared to the HD800s from Sennheiser these feature a better bass performance and can compete in terms of detail retrieval. Interestingly enough Head-Direct have yet to manufacture a headphone amplifier that will do these beasts justice, there is a balanced amplifier in the pipeline but until then people will have to find another solution.
Pros: Performance across the line, Comfortable, Excellent build quality, Price reasonable for a set of extreme high-end headphones, Excellent cable system, Old fashioned yet stylish look
Cons: Expensive, Requires a potent amplifier to sound their best, Looks might not appeal to all, Not portable, Ear cups are fingerprint magnets
