Excerpt: Any number of high-end loudspeaker manufacturers have entered, or contemplated entering, the high-performance headphone marketplace, and it is easy to understand why. For an entire generation of music enthusiasts, entry-level “hi-fi” systems are now more likely to be based on headphones than on speakers.
Excerpt: Some audiophiles consider Focal’s $180,000-per-pair Grande Utopia EM to be the world’s finest speaker. The Spirit One, Focal’s first headphone, weighs about 99.9% less and costs about 99.8% less. Yet its brushed aluminum metal parts, matte black soft-touch finishes, and detachable cord with a woven cover convey some of the Utopias’ high-end vibe.
Excerpt: Mention Focal to audiophiles and the thought of its large floor stander speakers easily come to mind. So when the French hi-fi speaker maker recently said it was getting into headphones, many head-fi folks were thrilled to hear what would come of the effort.
Conclusion: We really like the Focal Spirit headphones, they have a sound that is very appealing. If we had to be concise, we'd say they sound "just right". There's no time when we felt one bit of the sound had too much of any one component, or not enough of any part of the frequency range. In terms of comfort, they lose a tiny bit because they aren't all that easy to adjust, clamp quite hard and have cups that are fractionally too small for our ears.
Pros: Sound glorious, bass when you need it, well-balanced, removable cable
Conclusion: Available in black or white, the award-winning, high-fidelity Focal Spirit One headphones are a real treat for your iOS devices. We would recommend trying them on before buying if you have adult male ears, however.
