Excerpt: I'm an acoustics professional with a pro audio background, and after much research and comparative listening, the ER-4's are the clear winner on the IEM market. The frequency balance is as close to flat as I've found in an IEM and compares favorably to my reference headphones and loudspeakers including HD650's and Focal monitors. The soundstage, isolation, and dynamics are as good as more expensive IEM's I've tried.
Pros: Accurate, Flat Response, Good Bass, Good Value, Great Sound
Excerpt: I purchased the Etymotic Research ER-4PT because I was going on a plane trip and I wanted the maximum passive noise isolation and the clearest sound reproduction possible. These ER-4PT headphones did not disappoint. Once in the ear, most noise, specially plane engine noise, disappeared and I could hear my music clearly. You will pay a premium for this luxury but it is well worth it since the clarity of sound is awesome.
Pros: Durable, Good Value, Great Sound, Lightweight, Optional Custom Ear Tips, Stylish
Excerpt: I lost my prized HF5's and decided to make the leap to the ER-4pt's. I am pleased with my choice. These have a more robust construction than the HR5s, which felt dainty in comparison. The sound is a little more accurate and immersive than the HR5's. I love to close my eyes and being able to visualizes the musicians playing the individual instruments rather than the coarse overview of the music that I got from every other headphones I have owned.
Summary: These IEM's are a true revelation! I am listening mostly to classical music, both in the concert hall and on CD's and digital music media. So I have a lot of experience with headphones, both on ears as in ears. The problem with most headphones is the exaggeration of the bass, mostly represented by a sort of rumbling in your ears, created by the headphone-manufacturer to give you a so called real bass experience. You never feel this in the concert hall.
Not quite the best you can buy, but then again they're not the most expensive either. Definitely not for Beats lovers ;)

Summary: If you want souped-up bass, don't buy these. If you want a flat, well-defined & beautiful reproduction of music, these are for you. I'm on my 3rd pair now (one lost, one washed in the washing machine). Look after them and they'll last a long time....all you need are the replacement filters once they've become clogged up by earwax.
