Review – ATH-ANC23 Noise-Cancelling Earphones & ATH-ANC7b Noise-Cancelling Headphones, Plus the Classic ATH-AD900 Open-air Headphones from Audio-Technica

Excerpt: Audio-Technica is one of the most highly respected names in audio, and their line of headphones and earphones is well known. We have reviewed their noise-canceling units in the past, and this year saw revisions to those product lines. We are big fans of in-your-ear-canal earphones; they reduce outside noise, which means you can play at lower levels with better bass and audio response.
Excerpt: Reviewers of audio equipment must, as a matter of necessity, talk about somewhat abstract concepts like “dynamic range.” These terms aren’t often very well defined, but are important nonetheless. Dynamic range, which in principle simply defines the difference between the background noise level of a product and the loudest sound the product can reproduce, is a particularly significant case example.
Conclusion: The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 handily outperformed our expectations. Their sonic clarity, strength and agility put them on par with designer models that cost as much as $300 to $400. Throw some best-in-class active noise cancellation and a comfortable, secure fit into the mix and we say the ANC23 would be a value at $200. The fact that they come at a street price of about $80.00 is almost unfathomable, especially considering their stellar audio quality.
Pros: Extremely effective noise cancellation, Open, detailed sound with ample bass, Comfortable, well-sealed fit, Very high value
Cons: Awkward cable lengths, Slightly muddy at extreme volumes

Summary: Audio-Technica has brought the price of noise cancelling earphones sharply down with the ATH-ANC23. These earbuds have decent sound quality and good noise cancellation, although the buds' large size and the heavy weight of the noise cancellation circuitry will annoy anyone looking for especially small or portable listening.
Pros: Excellent noise cancellation for earbuds, Good passive noise cancellation
Cons: Noise cancellation circuit is heavy, Ear-buds are comparatively bulky
