Though the purpose of this review was more to build a bank of headphones to compare open-backed cans to compare to in the future, the AKG K701 introduced in 2007 are still impressive to this day. With a great frequency response, extremely comfortable wear and open soundstage, these are a good entry to mid-level pickup for those who are fans of an analytical sound. Read more
Today, most people who’s spend enough time with the trio either moved on to other headphones, custom IEMs, or build up a solid desktop system with the HD650. For sure, if your budget is $300, it may be best to get one of the closed headphones I compared on this shootout: http://www.headfonia.com/closed-cans-shootout-m-50-esw-9-t50p-hd25-1-beats-studio-srh-840-srh-750dj-k181dj-and-dj1pro/ They may offer less fidelity than the three, but some of them like the AKG K181DJ,... Sound "The AKG K701s had a smooth, even response and lots of inner detail, yet they weren’t at all analytical or peaky." They had "low, powerful bass with good detail," an "exquisite" midrange, and highs "befitting other AKG headphones." Features "The K701 is not just a K501 with bass; it has quite a few interesting technological advances. Read more
It's been a while since we had a truly high-end pair of headphones through the office. Many might consider spending more than $100 on headphones to be overkill. But the sky is the limit for those who truly appreciate high quality audio. With a street price of just over $400 (and an RRP of more than double that!), the AKG K701 headphones are not exactly cheap; however, you definitely get what you pay for. Read more
I agree 100% with Road Warrior's review and the comments about the top of head pain, being an owner of these myself whose head hurts after an hour or so of wearing them. Plus, I end up with an "Our Gang" Alfalfa-style cowlick on the top of my head where it presses down, which I then have to walk around with the rest of the day... The other note of caution may be obvious to some but not others, so I'll mention it... Read more
The K701s are a fairly cheap pair of headphones with an amazing soundstage. This of course makes it a natural at playing live recordings and classical music. The treble is clear and high, the mids are plenty, and the bass (while not plentiful) is precise and hits the lower notes perfectly. Definitely not a good choice for heavy rock/techno/etc though. The connection type of the agk701 is not 1/8 inch. It's 1/4 inch aka quarter inch. It comes with an adapter for 1/8 but that is not it's native plug type. A headphone amp is also recomended. A 1/4 inch one. Also you might want to look into getting a flex adapter instead of using the hard 1/8 adapter it comes with. Ever see a trs output sink into itself? I have. Read more
AKG has brought their considerable audio engineering skills into focus in on their high-end dynamic headphone designs and produced an astonishingly good sounding pair of cans in their K701. Getting it absolutely right at this level of performance is tough and the K701 gets pretty darn near. These cans deliver a dynamic and punchy sound; articulate and clear over the full audio range. Bass lovers will dig the solid punch and control of these cans; classical and acousti…
