Summary: *The ash collector and the grates make the Gold a better value, unless you got your Silver for free or near to it (as did I). If you were to buy a Silver and upgrade the grates, you would spend almost as much as just getting the Gold, and you wouldn't have to worry about jury-rigging a better ash collector.
Pros: *Can often be found for cheap or free on Craigslist or by dumpster diving *Very flexible, can be used for direct heat, indirect heat, and can also double as a smoker *Durable, easy to assemble *Classic good looks *The satisfaction of building a fire and cooking on it. *The one-touch system helps with cleaning and doubles as a vent.
Cons: *The ash collector plate is terrible, ash will go everywhere with the slightest gust of wind. I swapped mine for a 9 inch round disposable aluminum casserole dish, that works much better, doesn't let the ash be blown around as much. The collector on the Gold model is even better yet. *The cooking grates are not very nice on the Silver model. The Gold has an upgraded grate that has flip up sides, so you can add charcoal without having to remove the grate. The upgraded ...
Summary: I originally intended to buy this grill from Lowes as I had a 10% coupon to apply towards the purchase. The same grill at Lowes had different cooking grates from the one at Home Depot. Apparently, the Home Depot Weber Genesis Silver B has porcelain coated cast iron grates as an exclusive promotion instead of just the porcelain coated grate. So, I bought the one from Home Depot.
Summary: Our previous grill was a charbroil which lasted about 5 years and then fell apart piece by piece. But, it was only in the $200 price range. We've has this grill for three years now and have had zero problems with it. It has never failed to ignite and cooks pretty evenly. It has a large cooking area ( I can cook about a dozen chicken breasts or more at once...)It was certainly worth the extra money to get a product that will last.
Pros: The lid is quite heavy until you get used to it.
Cons: The lid is quite heavy until you get used to it.
Summary: This is an extremely well built and designed gas grill. It simply cooks better by design that any other gas grill I have owned. It also will outlast 5 cheap gas grills. If you have owned a cheap grill and it looks tired and old after a couple of years, you know what I mean. I have had mine for 3 years and it looks brand new. My dad has had the same model, left outside, uncovered, for 8 years now and it performs perfectly.
