Summary: This is a substantial appliance and appears well designed. BUT when you pay a LOT of money for what is represented to be a superior product you do not expect it to suddenly stop working. Obviously several owners of this product have had the same experience. Do NOT buy unless you want to be disappointed when it suddenly fails to work. AND apparently the parts to repair are not generally available.
Summary: Breville BSG520XL Panini Duo 1500-Watt Nonstick Panini Press My wife bought this for me because she didn't like my old reliable Walmart grill. So we are out some $400 for the grill and extra plates. It is a good idea but the manufacturing end seems to have problems. The plates will not stay in and continually pop out requiring re-insertion. If you are not there to see this occur most likely you will return to find uncooked food.
Summary: The price was great,Shipping very fast, and best of all this thing make one hell of a sandwich.Never thought i would find a used grille i would like, but i trusted your discription.I am very pleased i did.Thank You
Summary: Listening to all of the problems others have encountered, I can only scratch my head. I have been using my Breville grill on virtually an every-other-day-basis for the past 5 years and not a hiccup. I just love it! Yes, as others have noted, it will not sear/broil a 1/2" thick steak: just doesn't seem to get hot enough. So I have solved that 1 shortcoming by purchasing a good stove-top grill-pan for $40 (Calphalon).
Summary: Like many other reviewers here, I was a happy BGR400XL owner for ~1 year until it stopped working. My grill failed in the middle of a pool party I was having, ~2hrs into it being turned on. I opened it up and discovered that there's a safety thermal cutoff which kills the grill to prevent fire if it overheats.
Summary: Finally,a good grill that heats up quickly and cooks to perfection. With interchangeable plates, it's really versatile. The only negative is, it won't open flat. But, with removable plates, it's easy to clean. Although, some reviews say it quits working after a few times, mine is a year old and is still great. Since it only takes about 10 minutes to reach "sear" temperature, setting a timer is helpful.
Summary: I thought that this grill was the bees knees until it just stopped working for no reason just after the warranty wore out. I took it a Breville authorized repair shop which was an hour and half drive from my house. I live in the NYC metro area - you would think that they would have at least 1 authorized repair shop within the city or at least 1/2 hour out. I had the machine fixed for 75% of cost of what I paid for initially for the grill.
Summary: Currently, I am having considerable difficulty with the vendor (Premier Appliance) for the Breville BGR400XL Grill I purchased in August 2010 received in September/October. The shipping box I received from the vendor contained the product but was missing the removable flat grill (tantanium I think it's called) that was advertised to be included by this vendor.
Summary: I bought one of these at Bed Bath and Beyond. It worked great for about 6 months and then no heat, barely warm enough to melt cheese for a panini, couldn't toast the bread and definitely not hot enough to cook chicken or meat. I returned it to BB&B and they exchanged it for a new one (thank you). However about 9 months later (and no extremely heavy use), the same symptoms returned.
Summary: I was not aware that this product was referbish, it cost me $100.00. It was shipped via Fed Ex; they do not required signature, therefore it was left by my door, a neighbor took it and left on vacation. I found this out by another neighbor, I got the box back 3 days ago, it was never used, just take it out of the box. It's Big, I do not know what to do with it, because I purchaased over a month ago and the slip it not inside.
