XFX Radeon HD 7950 Black Edition Review

  • Summary: It’s only marginally faster than the Sapphire HD 7950 OC, however, and if you don’t have the cables and adapters for your particular monitor, you’ll need to spend a little more. Overall, the nod goes to Sapphire this time, since Sapphire’s whole package seems a little more well-rounded. Still, this is one fast card, and if you build one into your gaming rig, you won’t be unhappy about the performance.
  • Pros: Great performance; sleek appearance
  • Cons: Pricier than the competition; no monitor adapters included; less power efficient than similar cards.

  • Conclusion: We are however a little surprised to see the lack of dual BIOS on this card. It isn't as much of an issue with the Black Edition because that is for high end users and already uses an enthusiast BIOS but for the 7950 DD there is more of a chance that users would want to flash and so a backup would have been appreciated... it is after all one of the key differentiating factors between the 7900 series and the GTX580. The perfect card for high detail gaming at 1920x1080.

  • Conclusion: As we mentioned in our main article, the HD 7950 is one hell of a card that’s been parachuted into a competitive $450 price point but AMD’s board partners will be the determining factor whether this GPU sinks or swims. At face value it accomplishes everything we could possibly want since the reference design has plenty of performance on tap and efficiency is literally second to none.
