Presentation is always the first summary I give in each product review conclusion, but ironically this mundane topic seldom provides the same outcome. Sapphire, who I have pointed out once already is at the top of the sex-sells marketing game for the computer industry, offers us a full spectrum of tastes... er, personalities... for their product characters. FiringSquad says: In stock form ATI’s Radeon 4870 delivers excellent performance but at the expense of very high operating temps. For a lot of hardware enthusiasts, this is simply unacceptable. If you’re one of those gamers who is looking for a 4870 card with better cooling than what ATI offers, Sapphire’s Toxic 4870 is definitely the graphics solution you’ve been looking for. Read more

Having been massively impressed by Sapphire's Radeon HD 4850, we couldn't wait to see what its faster sibling, the HD 4870, could achieve. It certainly looks a more powerful card, as it has a large heatsink which takes up two slots. This was one of the few cards here to run our 1,440x900 Crysis test at a playable frame rate with 4x anti-aliasing. Its score of 34fps made it the second-fastest card here in Crysis after Leadtek's GTX 260. Read more

All this is a roundabout way of saying that unless you own a 24-inch (or larger) monitor, save your money and buy an HD4850. Or wait a bit longer and get a GeForce 9800GTX+, or HD4870X2; both will offer more performance and value for money. Read more

    • Faster than a 4850, Smaller than a GTX 260
    • Not earth-shattering performance, Lots of competition

After we reviewed the Sapphire HD4850 we thought we had seen the best that ATI/AMD had to offer. We found just how wrong we were when we ran our first test with the Sapphire HD 4870.  Here is a video card that has Nvidia scratching it's head try to find card that will compete with it. Being a true ATI fan boy I think it is great that the roles have finally been reverse and for now ATI has the best performing and selling cards available today.  It may be a bit early to... You may think that the Radeon HD4870 is a high-end card with its specifications and features but you'd be wrong. AMD wants to give you more bang for your buck and it has certainly succeeded - with bells on - with the HD4870. Its price tag puts in firmly in the mainstream and as such it's a steal. Read more

Bought this card to replace an 8800 GTS OC 320mb DDR3 graphics card. The performance is excellent for the price. My 3D Mark 2006 score went up by 40%. Grand Theft Auto 4 finally became playable at 1680 x 1050 at high detail and long draw distance. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 now runs at full screen at maximum settings with VSYNC on with NO slow down. The card comes complete with a DVI - HDMI adapter as well as plenty of cables for connectivity to various output devices. Read more
