Summary: my gps stopped working 1 week after i got it and i am getting no help from the people that made it so im sat here with a crap gps that i cant get fixed THANKS AMAZON.COM FOR NOT TELLING ME THE GPS IS OUT DATED AND THE COMPANY NO LONGER MAKES THESE GPS OR UPGRADES THEM.
Summary: For the price of $99 w/free shipping through Amazon, the NAV 740 is an awesome buy. I live in the sticks and, other than showing my home on another street (my street is in a new development), this GPS takes me wherever I want to go. Easy mounting on windshield.
Summary: I had to try and read about all the top line GPS's and took a chance on the NAV740. Hopefully V7 can get these units into chain stores for a hands on demo. I had no problem when contacting customer support to find out if I should update my maps with the software online.
Pros: Customization, ease of use, keyboard options, blanking of characters while typing, large POI base, speed of satellite detection, elevation reading, refresh rate while traveling, Multimedia (if that's your thing), bright screen with night mode, autozoom, the way the street names are displayed, tex...
Cons: Voice does stutter a little on hard names though understandable, sometimes it is off by a few houses one way or the other (but many GPS's do the same). These are the only things that would otherwise make this unit perfect, IMO.
Summary: Tech support spoke English and was able to get my questions answered without a lot of phone time the first time. I will be contacting the peoople who make the map software and give them some areas that can be corrected. Got the unit through Newegg at a great price.
Pros: Works as advertised. Installed a 16G SDHC and load all software and maps. Manual says you need FAT or FAT 16. FAT 32 is the only way you can format SDHC. Worked with tech support and decided to try FAT 32. It worked fine. It took a little time, but I got settings and other areas to work just fine...
Cons: Manual at times somewhat confusing, but tech support was able to help me through. Map data base could use some updating as some places and roads were not poperly named.
Summary: -easily moddable:), newegg has this open box for 155 and you cant beat it for the price.
Pros: -text to speech -good battery life (CHARGE THE UNIT UNTIL IT HAS A GREEN LIGHT BEFORE YOU USE IT! The instructions don't make this clear, but you NEED to let it charge for a couple of hours the first time). -tons of POI's (~11-12million) -recalculate tool works fast and just as good as the garmin...
Cons: -has come close but missed a couple of POI's. Finds my house perfectly, -maps need updating. Doesn't have my office in the right spot (its about 5 years old). -english female voice seems to crackle a bit, cant get it to make Dave the default voice. -doesnt tell you whether your destination is on ...
Summary: Despite the cons, this is a good gps with a lot of flexibility. Hopefully future official updates will address some of the issues above, but with a little work they can be fixed now. Haven't tested the media player functions yet.
Pros: Large POI database - 11 million locations, large easy to read screen even in sunlight, ability to configure how off-route re-calculations are handled, easy to unlock, growing support for mods.
Cons: Some features not fully developed, "smart zoom" not so smart, but can be turned off. No display of current speed, current street only temporarily displayed. There is a mod out there to fix this. No auto power-off when power supply turned off.
Summary: If I can get one that works for more than 1 week I will be glad to have the product.
Pros: Many good features in this product for the price.
Cons: Text to speach is only available in english. First unit I recieved crashed whenever exposed to tempratures less than 65 degrees ferenheight. New egg was fast in allowing me to return it. Second unit randomly crashes and re-boots irrespective of temprature. I sure hope the third unit works, Or I w...
Summary: Love all the modes of display and the media player. The kit is complete with needed chargers for home and car and windshield mounting. I have no complaints. Unless you need your GPS to speak in a british voice and have money to blow on a $400+ GPS, then buy this one!
Pros: Does pretty much everything the really expensive popular brand starting with a G does. I put a 8 gig SD card in it and it worked great. Plays WMV, MP3, MP4, etc. That expensive brand doesnt! It has never locked up on me and I've changed the mem card and put in a ton of MP3's and videos on it.
Cons: Sometimes when using the text to speech voice that says Road Names, it can stutter ever so slightly. If that bothers you then use one of the other voices that speaks but doesn't say road names.
Summary: Over the course of a couple of weeks I've looked at dozens of different GPS devices from a variety of manufacturers. By chance while looking at a Navagon review on PC Mag I found the NAV 740. The review was favorable. I took a chance with this unit and I'm not disappointed. I'm impressed.
