Summary: Setting up the device was tedious, but I recall a similar process with my previous Garmin GPS. It took four hours of downloading and backing up to get the maps current. The online "myTomTom" program works well, however. My disappointment was that I cannot have both the US and Europe maps in the machine at the same time--not enough internal memory.
Summary: This is a good GPS but was description was flawed with half truths. When I purchased this unit, it offered lifetime "maps" (Plural) and that was my main reason for purchasing it. I later found out that it was only lifetime "North American" map and not European. After my purchase, I complaints, they changed their product summary and gave me one extra European map update. The unit overall is adequate.
TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
LaVerne A. Franken, Amazon
14 May 2013
Summary: Very pleased. Took it on our trip to Ireland. Even the one lane narrow byways loaded without problems like the Gap of Dunloe road. It paid for itself in the time saved by giving the correct turns etc. At the round abouts, it would tell which exit to take. Very pleased.
Summary: I had several problems with the TomTom XXL 540TM World Traveler Edition. The first one I received had corrupt files and stayed frozen at the start-up screen. The seems to be a common problem. After several hours of trouble-shooting, I had to return it. This was an annoyance, but Amazon made it a simple, fast process. My purpose for buying this GPS is to use in Europe. For my upcoming trip, it would be more expensive to rent one while I'm there.
Summary: I had an old TomTom ONE 3rd Edition that finally passed on to its greater reward after many years of great use. I did my research and updated myself to the TomTom XXL 540TM, and haven't regretted that decision. I was definitely after the Lifetime Maps option, a big plus. I also wanted the 5-inch screen on the new device, a must for these "not so young" eyes of mine. *grin* A big surprise was the voice reading the street names, which I really appreciated!
Summary: I guess I've been spoiled by computers and iPhones with map and traffic features. This does have a map, and it does give audible directions, but today's portable GPS units seem to be a bit clunky compared to modern computer software. The pros: The audible directions do get you to where you're going, and the lane exit view is helpful.
Summary: There is nothing like driving around in a foreign country and your TomTom loses GPS signal for long periods of time. In that regard, the TomTom is useless if it's going to lose signal like that so frequently.
Summary: Not perfect, but works well. I needed it for traveling through Europe. For the price, it is worth having one just for European trips. You can use google maps of your smartphone, but why risk of running over the data limit? I really like the compact mounting design.
