Summary: I have been a long time Garmin user (I have had a variety of Garmins over the years, and they have had a variety of issues, from the dreaded white screen of death, to smaller annoyances, such as being unable to locate satellites under a clear blue sky, to ridiculous interface issues, such as having...
Summary: Have tested 3 of these units. The second and third being replacements for the first which was defective. All three units could not retain a consistent GPS signal after extensive testing. Lots of time with Tom Tom support.
Summary: Traveling from norther Michigan to Indianapolis, in the middle of the night, this unit directed me off the highway way before I was to get off. Traveling about twenty minutes I came to a town, the roads were closed and there was no way around the town area to proceed further.
Summary: I purchased a new 540S World Edition. When it arrived it would not start-up. I contacted TomTom customer service (sic) and was on the phone for 2 hours before the rep told me to send it in to their service center. Two weeks later they returned a different unit in a box clearly marked "Refurbished".
Summary: I bought the Tom Tom XXL 540-S recently from Amazon. The packaging itself was not genuine as the box was bulged like its been opened and stuffed back and the cellophane tape was tampered obviously. I ignored that and went ahead to set it up.
Summary: It died the second trip out. It got me where I was going perfectly, but getting home again, it was soooo off the beaten track it was sad, also the voice stopped working. Thank goodness I could do a u-turn and figure out how to get back. I have returned it, as I could not trust it again.
Summary: Some pros of this Tomtom 540S: 1) nice and big 5" screen. 2) Quick start up. 3) Reminder of speed limit. But I had a lot of bad experiences with this GPS. 1) Can't use search function for particular name (like US Bank).
Steaming Pile, still better than Garmin or Magellan
A discerning consumer, Amazon
15 October 2010
Summary: This is the fourth GPS I've bought and returned this year, so maybe I'm just getting jaded, but each was a steaming pile in its own way. Each had some flaw so fatal that it was just not usable on a daily basis. Doesn't anyone care about making a good product anymore?
