Summary: Tried this based on some of the good reviews and promptly returned it after one trip. Got another Garmin. The problem with TomTom is the inability to stay zoomed out or in. You can zoom in and out, but it only stays for a second and defaults to a set view. Zooming out is critical so you can see where you are in relation to streets and what is coming up. With TomTom it is very disorienting to only know one street ahead.
Tomtom 1605TM - great GPS unit but Hopeless Software
9 July 2014
Summary: While this is a great GPS unit (in terms of size and directions) it is absolutely hopeless in terms of map updates. This is my second unit that i had to get replaced from amazon and unfortunately it does not update itself. Emails send to tomtom support have been going in thin air without any answer.
Summary: I purchased this device for a trip to Friday. The functionality was not as intuitive as I would have liked compared to Google's GPS on my phone. Now. after 3 months of use the battery has stopped charging. So of course i am now not able to return it so I will have to eat the $118 I paid for it. I used both my USB and cigarette lighter charge that came with the GPS but no luck.
Summary: I have had several TomTom units including a 530XXL. I thought I would go ahead and buy a new unit, as they now include maps for a lifetime of the unit. I thought instead of buying a map upgrade, I would just buy a new unit. Also, after three years, the battery quit on the XXL and will now only work plugged in. Fool me once, but now you must subscribe to the traffic camera database and buy your POI.
Summary: I had some issues with the device as soon as it arrived. I installed the MyDrive app and tried to update the maps under the lifetime map updates. This did not go well. The biggest issue is that the device has no meaningful error messages, the only message it displays is "Something went wrong" I had to trawl through the user forum to find out what I should be doing, no user manual is supplied with the device.
