"tech support is a joke"

14101410, CNET
14 January 2010
  • Pros: It works untill I update, then it ruins my life.
  • Cons: purchased map updates and updates ALWAYS destroys my saved addresses and puts me in Guam. Backup does not work, as well as Restore. It take about 6 hours to fix everything, then the next map update wipes my addresses and puts me back in Guam.

"not working after less than 2 years"

nfrlnd85, CNET
1 July 2009
  • Pros: it was very user friendly; several funny voices directing you to choose from
  • Cons: not sleek; the suction cup constantly dropped the device onto the floor by my feet while driving OR out the door when the door was open causing the front to get scratched by the parking lot;

in need of more localized details

Overstock
19 April 2009
  • Summary: For someone who just moved to a new town, GPS is always a help. However, the system really needs more localized information -- I have not been out that much, and so far I have encountered two occasions when I entered the street address and the system did not recognize the street name at all. There are not many "points of interest" stored for the area.

Tom Tom = Dumb Dumb

Frank C, pcRUSH.com
31 December 2008
  • Summary: Comments about TomTom ONE XL Automobile Navigator: For planning trips I recommend a computer and a web map. The problem I had with this isn't general design - I picked up the controls within seconds of touching a GPS for the first time. But it makes too many mistakes for my tastes.
  • Pros: Acquires Satellites Quickly, Compact, Easy Menus, Easy To Read, Easy To Set Up, Simple Controls
  • Cons: Not reliable

Tech support could be better

Jim, PhotoAlley.com
18 November 2008
  • Summary: The TOMTOM ONE XL would be OK if it came with an up-dated map but it dosn't, you can download one free from tomtom's website but everybody dosen't have highspeed internet and dialup takes 70+ hours. I don't think so! It needs an update badly. alot of missing information. The websites service center was no hope. I never found a link after two nites where I could tell my problem to someone. Just self-serve links. Forget the phone.
  • Pros: Acquires Satellites Quickly, Compact, Easy To Read, Large Screen, Reliable Performance
  • Cons: Inaccurate, Outdated maps

Basic navigation only - POIs are useless!

AURELIO, Amazon
23 October 2007
  • Summary: This could be a nice product if it weren't for the lousy mapping information. The wide screen is nice, menu controls are O.K., audio instructions are clear. The point-of-interest information, however, is inaccurate to the point of being useless. Wanted to look for a Home Depot on my newly bought TOMTOM, nope: generic 'shopping centers' only, you can't look by chain name.
