TomTom Go 950 Live: Has its faults, but very useful for high mileage drivers
16 August 2012
Summary: I've been using my TomTom Go Live 950 for around a year now so I've had plenty of opportunity to thoroughly test it out. What sets it apart from other sat navs I've used is TomTom's HD traffic service. The traffic services on other sat navs I've used have tended to be of limited use - I found that information updated erratically and only showed problems on motorways and trunk roads.
Pros: Accurate journey times, excellent HD traffic service
Good but why did they take out so many of the old good features?

Summary: My 6 year old GO910 started having some power problems so I decided to upgrade. Looked at the 1005 but was worried by some of the reviews that it wasn't quite ready yet, so opted for the 950. By chance my 910 stopped playing up so I have been running the two side by side for 3 weeks. Overall I like the 950, but not as much as I would have hoped. My 910 has a number of features that do not appear on the 950 and I regret their passing.
Summary: Bought the brute to guide me around Holland and Germany, and, later this year, along the West Coast of the US from Seattle South to LA. It replaces an ancient PDA running 'Destinator'. After extensive research and consideration of options like tablet computers (too big and cumbersome) smart phones (expensive to use on Pay as You Go data download terms and with suspect GPS reception qualities) I chose a Tom Tom device because of their reputation.
Summary: Within 10 minutes of opening the Box I had my 950 Go Live working as intended. The purchase was in addition to an existing Go 910 so I was pleased to use the same TOM TOM Home software, albeit I had to use another Email address as the Units are not interchangeable. The Live information on my first journey was spot on and I liked the option of being able to use another route if appropriate. The Lane Guidance is smart if you are not familiar with the road you are on.
Summary: This device does what it says on the box and it was also value for money. I notice on the web site this product has been reduced in price since i bought mine a month or so ago so now this really is good value for money.I also purchased a bluetooth remote control for this item and they both work great together.
Summary: When I first connected the 950 to TomTom Home it took several, I mean SEVERAL attempts to download EUROPE map update. AMERICA was no problem. No reason was given and I could only report it anonymously, so no feed back available. The unit itself is very good and easy to use. Battery life of about 2 hours is OK. I have had three TomToms now so am familiar with their operation. That's it.
Summary: The product is, as all TomToms really quick to use and intuitive. Accessing Live Services is easy, though many wont have factored in the extra cost of subscribing to the services. Without Live then it is half a satnav as the key features (ie Traffic, Cameras, searches) wont be accessible. The main gripe is the windscreen holder, this is a continuing flaw. After a few uses it will spontaneously fall which after a few times has damaged the in car charger.
Summary: ...although you do NOT have to 'pair' the SatNav with anything in order to use the 'Live' functions (as opposed to the earlier One models etc). The SatNav has an inbuilt transmitter/receiver to negate the requirement to Bluetooth pair the unit with anything. The only thing you need to pair the unit with your phone for is the hands-free phone function.
Summary: This is my third or possibly fourth TomTom - although I bought this one partially for HD traffic, I mostly bought it because my older TomToms are effectively useless - it is impossible to get them to link to mobile phones in order to get traffic info. They used to work just fine, with the same phone, even. But it seems that as soon as TomTom have a newer toy they lose interest in the old ones and don't bother to maintain them.
