Summary: The update when you do it is 6GB - takes a couple of hours or more. Not sure if that is line or server limited. Once that is done, you think that's it. Oh no. Now it has to download to the device. It predicts that's another 1-2 hours. Even all this would be fine if you could just connect it and leave it overnight. Not a hardship if you plan for that. But the cruncher here is the device just keeps disconnecting and hanging. You have to keep reconnecting it.
Summary: I have had my TomTom for a couple of months now so I feel that I can write a fairly useful review. Since I purchased it, there has been a major software upgrade so this review is for the latest version at this time: 13.060.1661805.111, OS 1644811 Plus points: Nice big high resolution screen, intuitive menu system, loud clear voice, accurate maps, sleep mode so it turns back on quickly, good windscreen mount Negative points: The maps are white, pink and grey.
Summary: This was a lot bigger than I was expecting but once you find a place to fit in the windscreen, without it obstructing the view, it is useful having the larger screen. The interface is much different to previous TomTom devices and some things, such as inputting longitude and latitude, are not intuitive but a quick search on Google solved that. Route planning is fast and the live traffic is very useful.
Summary: I drive a convertible, and the screen, although big, is not great in sunlight. Nor is the volume adequate in a loud vehicle with wind noise. The voice function kept waking up, mistaking the noise for me! Furthermore unlike Apple products which are very easy to use, this isn't at all obvious. You'll have to study the online manual and even then it will be a frustrating business learning to use all the features, which are unnecessarily complicated.
Summary: We haven't used the TomTom a great deal yet, but immediately had a problem in that my husband couldn't see the screen with his prescription polarised sunglasses. He's had to buy another pair of non-polarised sunglasses, costing over £200, so this made the purchase pretty expensive. Considering that polarised sunglasses are supposed to be good for driving, we can't be the only people that have been affected by this issue.
Summary: I bought this because the Garmin zumo 660 I have with lifetime updates still does not have adequate mapping of my locality. I bought a TomTom Start 25 for my wife which doeshave our area well covered and thought this top of the range large screen version would be a good device. The main features it is missing are: A 'go home' facility, ideally one click. Because our location is slightly off a road this is not easy to do on the device at the moment.
Summary: Good and easy to select routes. Frustrating that it is unable to navigate to numbers of houses and frequent errors from selected post codes. European maps used in Portugal - did not recognise many roads! Fast route planning software and good size and clear screen, but the large size can be obtrusive for driving vision in a small car.
Summary: TomTom has a reputation for making excellent devices which in my experience have worked better than those of others, with superior traffic monitoring. But there are problems. Irritating and time-consuming ones, sometimes causing serious delay. For every TomTom satnav you own you have to register with a different email address. Lots of people own more than one. In my case I want to keep the old one for backup.
