A GPS, a paper clip and a map

Ko-Jen Shih "kojen", Amazon
23 November 2007
  • Summary: We were so happy when we bought our first GPS unit 8 months ago. But our experience with TomTom GO510 has been a frustrating one. The unit requires frequent resets, sometimes right in the middle of unfamiliar places. If we ever forgot to bring a pin, we had to resort to the good old map to get us out of the jam. To TomTom's credit, it did replace promptly our dead unit after initial 2 months of use.

Don't be fooled by the features: the 510 is a poor purchase

A. R., Cocktail Enthusiast, Amazon
12 May 2007
  • Summary: I bought this to replace an old Magellan Navigator, and after using it for one month, I've found it to be inferior in almost every way. To give you a sense of the problems: 1) The TT 510 doesn't recognize a lot of rural street names around my area, referring to them instead by route number. This is fine if you've been told the number, but if you just have a street name, the TT will be no help at all. 2) In Manhattan, the TT 510 can't ever seem to find itself.

load of rubbish

Lucy Maud, Amazon
16 August 2007
  • Summary: Sorry to be so negative but have had nothing but trouble with the Tomtom go 510 since I bought it a few months ago. The power lead doesn't fit properly, it is too loose, and so it is difficult to charge up. It takes ages to lock onto satellites once turned on so you have to factor in an extra 5 minutes before setting off. It doesn't stick to the the windscreen on my car very well (VW Golf) and regularly comes clunking off and turns itself off.

Poor build quality!!

Farrel Doherty, Amazon
25 September 2006
  • Summary: I agree with some of the previous statements - its a lottery. Unfortunately, I lost the lottery after buying the 510. I was 3 days into a two week holiday on the winding roads of Norfolk when the unit died. I had to head for the nearest big town to buy a new unit (NOT a TomTom I might add!) - which wasted my time and severly wicked me off!! These units should be reliable and robust because of the very specific task they are performing.

Its junk, looks great but still junk

G. CLARK, Amazon
7 September 2006
  • Summary: Do NOT buy this unit. I have received mine and I was dying to get it into the car. I have not even managed to remove the protective plastic sheet from the front of it yet. It has frozen on the popup splash page when it boots up. It will not power down, it will not connect to pc via usb and it will not recharge. It is hopeless. I was wanting this one but was unsure after reading these reviews. My heart ruled my head and I thought maybe I would be lucky. I was NOT.

Bought 2 Neither of which worked

A. E. Pedder "Pedrosky", Amazon
24 July 2006
  • Summary: I bought one of these as it looked a good specification. The unit would not recognise the memory card and so was returned and a replacement given. The second would recognise the card but could not find a GPS signal on a clear day out of the car with no obstructions. I thought half an hour should have been sufficient! I lost confidence and gained a refund.

Forget it, the windscreen mount doesn't work

AGH, Amazon
12 July 2006
  • Summary: Ordered mine after re-assurance from TomTom via e-mail that they do not have issues with the current TomTom 510. I'll make no further comment on that, thanks Amazon for a speedy refund when I had to return it due to... the windscreen mounting bracket not making contact for re-charging, unless you hold head unit and mounting bracket in your hands and push them together. Tricky to do when I'm supposed to be holding a steering wheel while driving.
