Summary: My main reason for buying this product was to be able to log position of features and points from which I take photos and to create track logs, rather than to show me where I am walking. Hence I may not refer to it for long periods. The auto power down function (to increase battery life) means that if you forget to fire it up at regular intervals you lose chunks of your track log which I find very irritating. I have not yet found a way to turn that function off.
Summary: Using the Active 10 with thw GB Outdoor GPS Map has been great. I have found it very effective for most needs and more responsive, i.e. faster than earlier models. It is also great not to have to worry about having the correct map card with you on long journeys when unedrtaking a not 'planned well in advance' hike. Still find route planning and up dating problematic though. Think that this could be made more user friendly.
Summary: Though it looks a rugged piece of kit, it isn't, the battery cover broke within days even before I had chance to take the unit out on a test run. I had perhaps removed the cover half a dozen times to experiment with the battery configuration and check the serial number etc.when it cracked near the latch.
Summary: Very robust product which works effectively. Takes a while to lock on to satellites but then works really well. Can be a bit complex if you want to use all the facilities available but as a simple GPA device to show you where you are and to measure your walk it is simple and effective. Quite bulky but the screen is a good usable size. Battery life from the rechargeables supplied is very good. Easily lasts a full day.
Something is not quite right......But see explanation up from 2* to 4*

Summary: I have upgraded my review from 2* to 4*. I believe the problem detailed below is because the user guide implies you can take out the supplied maps SD card and save your walks/routes to a blank SD card. My comments below were based on testing the unit with my SD Card in not the maps card. The differences in the map are not immediately obvious. I have now used the Active on long walks in the Lakes and it was absolutely spot on the footpaths and roads at all times.
Summary: Although I've only had my Satmap for 2 months, so far, it's done everything I've required of it. Given that I acquired mine with the full GB 1/50,000 mapping for a very similar, if not better, price than the Memorymap 3500, I would say that not only does the Satmap appear to be a far better device (based upon customer reviews I've read for the Memorymap 3500), it is also better value. Additionally, the Satmap (so far) has worked well and proved dependable.
Summary: This is the first walking GPS device I have bought or used so I have nothing to compare it with, but my first impressions are very favourable. I did not find the Sat Map immediately intuitive to use as I imagine a touch screen device might be. However, having read the comprehensive downloadable user guide and taken time to familiarise myself with its method of operation, I do now find it straight forward. The screen is a good size and clear to view.
Gute Idee - Stufenweise Verbesserungen (ausgen. Akkulaufzeit)
