Summary: My main reason for buying this product was to be able to log position of features and points from which I take photos and to create track logs, rather than to show me where I am walking. Hence I may not refer to it for long periods. The auto power down function (to increase battery life) means that if you forget to fire it up at regular intervals you lose chunks of your track log which I find very irritating. I have not yet found a way to turn that function off.
Summary: I'm a big fan of anything that makes life easier. I've tried several other outdoor GPS systems - Satmap is way ahead of the pack. It's easy to set up and use and doesn't lose signal easily. Now that OS have dropped their prices, it's possible to have the entire map of the UK on one card with 1:25 detail for £250.00 which is amazing. Back up from Satmap is excellent - I've had mine serviced after some minor damage. Great product.
Summary: I am retired, so wanted something to give me total freedom to go backpacking again. It is taking time to learn, but the effort is worth it. It does everything I can think of, and some stuff I can't. It's a very good technical product, and certainly runs rings round my garmin.
Summary: I spent a considerable amount of time researching sat nav devices before eventually buying this one & I am really glad I went for this one. I didn't want to spend hundreds of pounds then realise I had bought the wrong one. It's fantastic! Planning, downloading a route & following it are a breeze with only a little practice. Very easy to follow, website is full of useful info & downloads. Battery life is unbelievable, you get several days use out of one charge.
Summary: After 3 month the back split and broke where the locking pin is, I was using AA batteries as they have a longer life than the re-chargable battery that's supplied. I contacted Amazon who gave me the address of the manufacture (outside the 60 day return period), Satmap said they are aware of the problem and sent a replacement back free of charge.
Summary: I can confirm that the Satmap 10 is fully waterproof as while I was out walking in the peak district I accidently dropped mine and it fell into a stream and sank to the bottom. After fishing it out and giving it a quick wipe down I was amazed when it carried on working as normal.
Summary: I have used satmap10 for over a year and never had any problems. I walk mainly in the cumbrian fells (with a 25k map)and use a rubber waterproof pack for added protection (my wife takes the mickey saying its my action man pack) . The satmap10 has survived a number of drops. I use the rechargeable battery and therefore have no need to keep on opening the back of the unit but keep it well charged before a day on the fells.
Summary: I like to take into account previous reviews before buying as I respect other buyers opinions and comments. So, I noted all the comments on the Satmap arriving with the cracked rear removable battery cover, mmm!, so I still ordered and guess what, mine came with a cracked rear removable battery cover (not so good).
Summary: Using the Active 10 with thw GB Outdoor GPS Map has been great. I have found it very effective for most needs and more responsive, i.e. faster than earlier models. It is also great not to have to worry about having the correct map card with you on long journeys when unedrtaking a not 'planned well in advance' hike. Still find route planning and up dating problematic though. Think that this could be made more user friendly.
