We'll see if the replacement unit works

Dan Kofoed, Amazon
17 September 2010
  • Summary: Within 1 hour of opening the packaging to set up the device, the "up" cursor on the central control panel broke, rending the device unnavigable and thus unusable. Hopefully the exchange device will be better constructed, as this model came highly recommended.

Don't waste your money - it stops working at some point

Sangmin Lee, Amazon
9 September 2010
  • Summary: I bought it about a year ago and used it several time. It was convenient and usefull. And one day, it simply stopped. It says internal error and turned off. No way to fix or reset. I called the service center and just confirmed there is no way to fix it. They don'thave fixing service but offered a lower price on refurbished unit. I'm confident it will die again. Don't even look at this unit nor compare with others. It dies. That is it.

It worked for 35 days

Camper248 "camper248", Amazon
30 April 2010
  • Summary: I received this new unit as a gift and it worked fine for 35 days. Then an "internal error" message started to pop up and close down the unit. I had to send the unit back and am waiting for a replacement. When the system worked it worked fine. I am new to geocaching so using the system was by trial and error. The manual is poorly written, the website is poorly, designed and good luck if you need to call the call center.

Not at All User Friendly, Even for the Tech Saavy

B. A. Chaney, Amazon
14 July 2009
  • Summary: I ordered this GPS because I thought it would be useful for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and maybe for emergency use in the car. After two weeks of struggling with it, I think I'm ready to give up. Neither I nor my husband, can get the software to load properly, and therefore when we turn it on we can't get an accurate reading of where we are on the map (we just get our location on a tan background--which is not very useful).

Not very user-friendly

Zulma Johnson, Amazon
30 June 2009
  • Summary: This is not my first handheld GPS unit. We currently own the Garmin eTrex Legend CX Color Mapping Handheld GPS to mark waypoints for the hot fishing spots on our lake. We thought it would be great to have another GPS so we can each carry one and go our separate ways. First let me tell you that I attempted to install the software (VantagePoint) on a Saturday afternoon. The page would not load.

Magellan Triton 500

RCoy, Amazon
3 March 2009
  • Summary: I bought this at a very good price since it was mismarked and they sold it at the price on the package. I spent 1 day trying to get the NG Topo maps loaded with no success and took forever to connect it to the PC. The electronic compass was difficult to set up and afterwards it would show N as anywhere but N. Even though I saved a lot of money when I bougt it I returned it because it would not connect to the computer and the compass was useless.

Not very good!

drvlb, Ebay
1 November 2008
  • Summary: I agree with almost all of the other reviews, I should have read them first! I bought it because my old gps quit working. This one has almost no good information stored from the factory. It is really usless to me. I need to sell it quick and get a garmin. You can't talk to their support people!!

Don't waste your money or time with this one.

WireTwister "LER", Amazon
17 September 2008
  • Summary: I purchased the Triton 500 prior to going on vacation in Kauai, HI. I wanted to go hiking on some of the many trails. After I purchased it, I found out that it had no topos pre-loaded. Why would one buy a handheld GPS without topos. I live in the SouthEast, so I purchased a Southeast set and a West set of maps (found out that they were keyed only to that unit S/N). I downloaded the maps to the Triton and it worked for the first day (of 9 days).

Caution! Not What It Claims!

Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF", Amazon
18 July 2008
  • Summary: First off, I would recommend any hiking GPS system as a backup to a simply map and compass. That said, I want to clarify something about this particular model. This is a basic beginner's device to learn about Navigation, Waypoints, Trails, GeoCache and all the additional methods that go along with these. It also has a good "Best Fishing & Hunting Times for Current Location" menu as well as "Viewing Sunrise, Sunset Times" and "Lunar Information".
