Summary: after three days of try to get it working i have called magelllan and was told that i need an up date after doing that its still as use less as a brick i only wish i would have know that it was a discontinued unit that i was buying for 64 bucks
Summary: I've purchased thousands of $'s over the years on Amazon. I usually review an item thoroughly before buying and I take the reviews with a grain of salt. I'm not an IT guy, but have been programming and using them since the 60's. When my friends or co-workers have computer problems, they come to me. All I'm saying is, I know my way around a computer. While the Triton 1500 seems like a good product, it is almost useless with out the TOPO maps.
Summary: Besides being hard to use and unreadable in sunlight there is a bigger problem: Magellan will NOT repair these units. If out of warranty they will only replace it with a reconditioned unit and charge you a fortune!
Summary: I am a big fan of Magellan GPS for the auto and own one for each car. I have a Crossover, and expected this to be a step up. I read reviews explaining problems, but several others stated that an upgrade to the fireware made them go away. This has not been the case with me. Mine was shipped with the latest firmware but it locks up almost every time it is connected to the computer, requiring me to unplug and remove the batteries.
Summary: This thing is the worst electonic gadget I have ever owned. It locks frequently and will not unlock unless you take out the batteries, it would not find a way point and is generally useless to me. I am sending it back on warranty.
Summary: I bought the Magellan Triton 1500 because it was such a good deal. After I made the purchase I continued to research the product and there were several poor reviews of the product mainly involving the software that comes with the unit and Magellans' poor customer service which is based in India.
Summary: I consider myself a computer geek but after nearly two days of tinkering I couldn't get a GPS fix or to interface with my PC. I knew it was a piece of junk when I returned it (thank you Boatersworld, you guys are awesome) but didn't realize how bad it really was until my Garmin Colorado 400i arrived. Within 15 minutes I had it unpacked & got a great GPS lock the first try. I was able to upload the maps, software & geocahe waypoints with ease.
Really cool for the 5 minutes at a time that it worked

Summary: Purchased this item, took it out on a short hike, 10 miles. While I was playing with it before the hike I noticed it was locking up. I would either have to reset it or pull the batteries and restart. It started doing the same thing during the hike. It locked up and on restarting couldn't acquire any satellites. I reloaded firmware when I got home, reset to factory defaults and put new batteries in, same problem.
Summary: Just got the unit with the TOPO Explorer deluxe. First problem is the set up which as others have noted is complicated. I got the latest firmware upgrade from Magellan's VP site and the TOPO software still doesn't find the 1500. The Vantage Point software finds the unit, but the TOPO doesn't. I see on other reviews that you can search the web and figure it out, but why do I need to figure out their messed up software?
