The bottom line: The Magellan RoadMate 1700 isn't a GPS device for everyone, but with its huge screen and road-trip-friendly features, we think truckers and RV drivers will love it. Read more

If you don't like certain GPS navigational devices because of their small, unflattering screens, then the Magellan RoadMate 1700 is your solution. It offers a 7-inch screen that looks extremely beautiful and is completely touch-enabled, meaning you won't have any issues "touching" the right button if you have large fingers. This is a great choice for consumers that want the largest screened GPS possible without getting an in-dash navigation system. The RoadMate 1700 from... Read more

The ease of use, large number of POIs, enough maps preloaded and additional memory through the SD card plug-in makes this device a very good fit for your vehicle. Even after taking the cons into account I would not hesitate to rate it at level 4 easily. If you have the dash space, this is a good choice for your vehicle and is available from Amazon at about $197.99 (as on 28 May 2010), sometimes with free shipping. 4. Magellan RoadMate 1700 Review

    6 June 2010

Compared with the 3.5-inch screen size standard of older personal navigation devices, as well as current entry-level devices, today's 4.3-inch and 5-inch units seem downright huge. More screen real estate means easier viewing and faster data inputs. However, the Magellan RoadMate 1700's 7-inch wide-screen display dwarfs them all. Is this too much [ ... ] Read more

It's got a big screen, which is the ultimate draw card of the Magellan RoadMate 1700. Other features of the unit are available in lower end models and for a decreased price, but you won't have the visibility that the 7 inch screen provides. Power requirements are higher in this model. As it doubles as a video screen for in car entertainment, it is a worthwhile investment if you are in the market for both. Read more

loved the big screen but address book lists by alphabetical order not distance a bad thing when you use this as a database to see whoever is closest to your current position. another thing, when approaching a turn, it only shows tenth of a mile, not ft extremely slow route re-calculation unit washes out in sunlight battery power very short when not plugged in. if my wife did not need a unit, and she does not drive very much, i would definately return it, no question... I have owned many Garmins, and typically, I have bought the base model every year. However, I decided to try Magellan for something different, and I'm glad I made the purchase. The screen is enormous, and very easy to read while driving. Though it uses the same maps as Garmins do, the 1700 shows the exit signs when approaching an exit/merge while driving on the highway. I found this as a very useful feature that is more explicit to understand rather than the GPS simply... Read more
