Summary: Actually, I purchased this unit because it was described as having lifetime maps (LM). When I received it, and after submitting the SN, and after trying to download maps off of the Magellan site (manager); I discovered that the unit does not have the lifetime maps feature, . However, it is a couple of years newer than my present gps, so I decided to keep it for my second vehicle. The price of the unit was very good also. I like the Magellans the best.
Summary: Simple to use. It has sometimes tries to send us down roads where a 4 wheel drive vehicle would barely be adequate and, like other gps, sometimes comes up with routes which will get you there but do not make the most sense. It was inexpensive and was delivered promptly. Value for money = excellent.
Summary: It worked fine. I updated map a few times. One time the map update failed in the middle of update. I haven't use it for a while because I didn't need it. Now I want to reuse it and tried to download upgrade again. The magellan homepage asked me to download content manager again and again without giving a button for actual map download. Maybe this is to be for old machines but it said 'life time map update', and only a couple of years later it doesn't work.
Summary: I bought one of these gps's and it was defective. I sent it back and the company willingley agreed to send another. when the second one arrived it turned out to be just as bad as the first. at this point I ask for a refund. I have not heard from them yet but I think they will refund my money.
Summary: This GPS has some nice features, such as free lifetime map updates. A few negatives: the cord is hard to plug in once you've put on the windshield holder, and the suction cup doesn't stick all that well to the windshield - mine fell off after a month or so. The PC update software is a bit obtuse, but eventually it makes sense. The GPS is a good value overall and easy to use for it's intended purpose. The voice directions are helpful as you approach an intersection.
Our grandtr had it up and running before she left it is easy to use.

Summary: We bought this GPS for our granddaughter to take to college with her so she can find her way back to our house. She was very excited about using it especially when she has a dead spot on her cell phone.
Summary: The Magellan 1424 is a great GPS. I'm not that good with direction and the 1424 always takes me to where ever i want. Its much better then my TomTom GPS. The main difference between the Magellan and TomTom is, before your supposed to make a turn, the Magellan will make this ding Sound. That ding sound is the best feature. Where with the TomTom, so many times when i'm supposed to make a turn and the TomTom wont tell me to make the turn.
