Summary: I was pretty happy with my old/previous RoadMate, but since someone decided to "borrow" it from where it was hidded in my car console late one night ... needed a new one. Was DELIGHTED that the prices have gotten so reasonable (paid almost $300 for my old one) now that GPS isn't so new, and to get the updated model was an added bonus.
Summary: Bought this as a christmas gift for a directionally challenged relative that is equally technologically challenged. Bought this because a friend had this unit and I can say it was actually a gift that paid for itself since I dont get random calls asking for directions or requests to print out directions from mapquest. I guess their thank youa couple weeks later was a good indication that it works great too though.
Summary: I bought one of these gps's and it was defective. I sent it back and the company willingley agreed to send another. when the second one arrived it turned out to be just as bad as the first. at this point I ask for a refund. I have not heard from them yet but I think they will refund my money.
Summary: This GPS has some nice features, such as free lifetime map updates. A few negatives: the cord is hard to plug in once you've put on the windshield holder, and the suction cup doesn't stick all that well to the windshield - mine fell off after a month or so. The PC update software is a bit obtuse, but eventually it makes sense. The GPS is a good value overall and easy to use for it's intended purpose. The voice directions are helpful as you approach an intersection.
Summary: Do not buy a Magellan. I have tried twice to obtain my "Free Lifetime Updates" and the unit won't update. Had to pay shipping to return my unit and they sent me a replacement that also won't update. I will never buy another Magellan product.
Our grandtr had it up and running before she left it is easy to use.

Summary: We bought this GPS for our granddaughter to take to college with her so she can find her way back to our house. She was very excited about using it especially when she has a dead spot on her cell phone.
Summary: The Magellan 1424 is a great GPS. I'm not that good with direction and the 1424 always takes me to where ever i want. Its much better then my TomTom GPS. The main difference between the Magellan and TomTom is, before your supposed to make a turn, the Magellan will make this ding Sound. That ding sound is the best feature. Where with the TomTom, so many times when i'm supposed to make a turn and the TomTom wont tell me to make the turn.
