Summary: This device is out of date and can not be updated through the Magellan Website. They no longer support nor update the maps for this item. I found out this the hard way. After buying one of them I tried to update the maps only to be told it could NOT be updated. Please before you buy one of these make sure you check the company and see that it can be updated first or that it has a lifetime update for the maps.
Pros: I've had the 4040 for a number of years now and it still works fine. I only wish I could save addresses under a nick name (i.e. Aunt Millie) instead of her address. Perhaps it's possible and I just don't know how to do that.
Cons: Maps updates are very expensive ($80) The battery doesn't charge anymore (after a few years) The woman inside the GPS gets mad when I go the wrong way
Summary: The Pros: A good starter unit. This is an overall good GPS for an older unit. The display is clear and easy to read, the map displays direction, time and speed, as well as the name of the street you are on. Trip mapping display is even more informative and easy to follow. The Bluetooth function is easy to use and works well in a quiet vehicle. You can add your own POI's to the SD Card with Magellan Software. The Cons: Map upgrades are expensive and out of date.
Overall: Worth the investment, but have a mapbook handy.

Summary: GPS is very helpful for me when driving in San Francisco. It gives me the best route thru the City. Also great for the Oakland Hills with it winding roads, and tight turns. Using a GPS really takes alot of stress away from driving. Negatives: Buying a used GPS means you get an outdated software. This GPS has old data, and doesn't recognize 3-yr old bridges and new on-ramps.
Summary: got this off of ebay for backup unit find it be very reponsive gets you werw you need to go dont like the 79.95 magellan trys to charge for map update goin to get traffic kit to see how that works like i said nice gps
Summary: the Magellan GPS is the best i have ever used.when the company made the maps ,they went into detail and covered all the bases. it works in all the small and out of the way towns and cities, it even has the country roads and trails in their maps. I drive a tow truck in a small town so i need a good GPS to get me around. I have tried MIO, TOM TOM, and GARMIN, all which have gotten me lost.so far the Magellan has not let me down, or made me pick up a map book.
