ther worst tech experience ever...

Ken Kofoed "dockofoed", Amazon
31 January 2014
  • Summary: I've had this piece for almost ten years and have struggled for hours with the service people in India. Never have had much success with the downloads of MapSend ( I now have four copies from them) and I can follow directions explicitly, thanx. I have a doctorate in another field (thank God) but am unable to get this to work. Broken battery key shaft early in the game hampered me greatly except when hooked to 12v source (not why you buy a portable GPS, right?

Device good, software out of date

Egil Kvaleberg, Amazon
21 January 2011
  • Summary: The device itself was nice enough, and works as expected. The software does not work with recent XPs, even with the supplied upgrade CD. Also, Magellan has ceased supporting the software, it seems, so no upgrades are available on the net, either. In addition, the supplied upgrade CD was supplied with a label that cause imbalance, and the CD drive to shake a lot. I managed to get things to work properly, but it took a lot of effort (find old machines).

This is the big daddy. Screen is SO big and color…

David Schlewitz, Trailspace.com
30 May 2010
  • Summary: This is the big daddy. Screen is SO big and color is great. I use it exclusively for Geocaching. For hiking the 12+oz., is too much. I am looking at the Magellan Triton 400 for hiking. This unit is easy to hook to computer and load it up with geocaches and maps. Now-a-days it would be a good buy.

Magellan Explorist with no company support

Guy Pruitt, Amazon
17 February 2009
  • Summary: The magellan company has probably the worst customer service of any company on the planet. I bought an Explorist XL several years ago and still the company has not put out the DVD map software for it. I still have no street maps for it. If you call them they lie to you about a release date. Every time I called they would tell me it would be available in 6 weeks. They did this for a year. The story then changed to "It would be available as a download at their web site".

Great unit when it works, Terrible Magellan customer support

rb-pf, epinions.com
1 July 2008
  • Summary: I do NOT recommend the explorist XL or any Magellan product, because of Magellan's terrible customer service. Magellan has the worst customer service I have ever experienced in 74 years!
  • Pros: Great unit (when {if} the display works)!
  • Cons: Magellan customer service is the worst, least helpful, I have ever experienced.

Magellan eXplorist XL

RobinW.Morris, Rate it all!
2 November 2007
  • Summary: First the first level technical support is terible and the second level technical support is non existant. Letters to the corporate office go unanswered. I bought it a year ago and have had it in the field twice. It is my fifth Magellan GPS. I continue to use my meridian color. The base map is terible... for instance it does not show the Hudson or Misissippi rivers. The base map is used at higher zoom levels even when you load a detailed map.
